The Old Folks Home

Redpullettmama: I am definitely praying for you. As a person that just went thru a family member with cancer I am always here to talk with if needed. This group is great at including you in their prayers/thoughts. Definitelly appreciative to all of them and I am sure they will do the same for you. My heart goes out to ya'll and you will be in my prayers.

Thank you! I know that this is not a terminal type cancer, but this is my dad. To me any cancer is bad news! I hate it, especially after having so many family members with it and having lost my grandparents as a kid to it. I just hate to have my dad go thru this. I broke and I cried yesterday...twice. Everytime I think about how unfair cancer can be, it makes me so mad.

Cancer is tough-- it comes in many forms. I can still see my grandmother in her hospital bed with a smile on her face. IT was the last time I saw her. I was about 6-7. Cancer leaves an impression.

I cried when my mother told me-- you get to cry. Twice if need be or more . . ..

I push my kids to avoid white bread , candy and sugar. Why do we have so much cancer now, when other areas of the world do not? I'm using food as my prevention. ( Yes, cancer is my pet peeve.)

She is a beauty! What do you call her? Do you have pics of any of the others? I would love to see a pic of her egg, too!

I call her "the other Carmen" - BF came up with it. While she looks similar to Carmen, she's much darker in her feathers. For about 2 years he couldn't tell Carmen from FatOne (they're both EE's but look pretty different). Then after he's able to figure them out, I get this one that is pretty similar to Carmen. Keeps him on his toes. He MUST know the chickens names.

There was only a little skiff when I went to bed and this is what I woke up to this.

I am so not ready for winter.

I am so glad that isn't me. I'm sorry it's you, but wow... not me.

I Bet you have been dreaming up a new gate to block the access    . . . . .it is begging for a new gate.  . . .
Oh, you got that right! I figure, with the 18 foot opening, I can have a 12 foot drive gate and a six-ish foot walk gate for deliveries or sumpthin' like that. There is a local wrought iron guy I intend to hire.... He has already told me he can do chickens - hens and chicks - not just the macho rooster emblem I have already seen on a gate he built.

But it is imperative I get the coop and run ready for occupancy before anything else. My checking account is screaming at me right now.

The coop was wired for power today. Tomorrow the hardware cloth goes up into the window frames and permanent ventilation areas. I have been trying to convince John he also needs to cover the gaps between the rippled roof panels and the top of the walls. "Nothing's gonna climb up there to get in,little birds MIGHT fly in...."

Well, tomorrow I will get all "customer knows best" on his butt. So to speak.

Linda - Design was my major in college (a hundred years ago) and I have been thinking about your gate. Give some thought to installing a more simple (less expensive) gate and commissioning some custom art pieces that can be bolted onto it. That way, you can keep the art if/when you want to sell and the new owners will not have to be enamored with chickens, like we are! You also won't have to have a place to use a chicken themed wrought iron gate, just a place for some metal outdoor art. Just a thought.....

.......I imagined a gate with vertical bars topped with some traditional decorations at the top. Then, along the bottom, silhouettes of hens, chicks, geese, ducks, etc., either solid, or with cutouts for the details........

..............still thinking.

Linda, I have looked and looked at that gate, and it just looks mass-produced to me (I'd even hazard that it is tubular aluminum or steel rather than wrought iron). I'm sure you could order a fairly basic gate kit, and have some custom touches like Wisher mentioned added to it for a lot less than getting a gate built from scratch.

Linda, I am loving the pictures of your new land! Gorgeous with all of it's crags and hills and boulders and trees. Do you have a pic of the cabin? I sort of have a thing for little cabins. If you are comfortable sharing pics,I'd love to see them!

Linda, if you have the choice and convenience is important, you might think of a mule gate opener with a solar panel. That's what we have at the end of our driveway. We didn't buy it, it was here when we bought the place, but boy howdy, we love it.
