The Old Folks Home

Who is ready for the time change? Don't forget..for those that do this.
I think they have this time change backward. I the winter I go to work in the dark and it is almost dark when I get home. I just installed lights on the chicken coop so I can see to feed them in the winter. In the summer we don't get to enjoy the evening because it doesn't get dark until 10:00.

I agree, Hagar, it should be just the opposite, or not at all.

Back when my boys were little and we lived in an area where there were neighbors close by, one neighbor had a friend come to his house to show off the 10 point buck he had killed. They were gathered around the truck looking at the buck in the bed when my son wandered up to see what they were looking at. I went to retrieve him and noticed he was looking sad and I thought the sight of the deer with a bloody tongue hanging out was too much for him. I guided him back toward the house and he walked away with his head down. I felt bad and said, "That made you sad, didn't it?" He nodded and added, "Santa is gonna need that reindeer." It broke my heart. All three boys hunt, but to date, he is the only one that hasn't killed a deer.

I used to be sad about hunting, back when I was a vegetarian. Now I've come to grips with the fact that meat is tasty, and that we're meant to eat it, just not over do it. However, I'm much more okay with something that lived a great life and had 2 minutes of horror, versus something that was "factory farmed" and had an entire lifetime of horror. I generally don't eat any meat that I haven't raised and butchered myself - I make exceptions for things BF or his family have hunted.

I went to visit my parents in Virginia a few years ago and they took me out to breakfast at a place that had brains on the menu. I had never seen that before. They took it off the menu recently with the prion disease increase.

So far four of six eggs have pipped. I have a silly question...do chicks in eggs sleep when it's dark? I only ask because they made no real progress during the night, but as soon as I turned the light on this morning they've amped up their movement. I know it's always dark under a big fluffy chicken butt, which is why I think it's a silly question, but I had to ask.

They hatch under a Broody, so they will hatch in the dark. They rest after pipping for up to 24 hours so it was probably just that frustrating time when we have to wait for the chick to absorb the yoke and get ready to break out of his\her shell prison.

Sending happy hatching thoughts your way!

Thanx ron. My first hatch I only got one...so I'm pretty excited. Hoping for more hens so my boys will give the poor girls a rest.

Those who process, how do you package your birds? I have those bags that shrink in hot water, but they're kinda a pain (I end up scorching my hands sometimes). We tried the ziplock seal bags that you have a little air sucker thing, which work decent enough, but are expensive and don't fit big birds.

I soo agree with what you have said here about meat. It is here for us, but in moderation. Mostly good for us in the winter when we can't grow veggies..but..that was back in the day...now we have our grocery stores. :p Still, I don't eat much meat even during the winter. I love how you reminded us of the difference in store bought, and the hunted. I've seen some pretty sad things with the Dairy farms, the cattle farms, and of course the chicken farms. Such a long miserable life for so many of them. There are some farmers that are great with their farms, but a lot that could care less.
