its hard to believe that just 150 miles from my home in the Philippines there are more than ten thousand dead from that devastating storm.
it had the force of a type 3 tornado but instead of being 1 mile across it was 300
the storm surge was like a tsunami, many stories high
how could a country with such limited resources prepare for such calamity

True that!Heard on an NPR station that the international community is better able to handle the aftermath of these events, and the medical services actually need to be trained in international medical issues to better serve in these kinds of crisises.
Oz, when something like this hits, a bunch of charities pop up - some fleece donors, others are legit. Where would you suggest we donate (if we want) to make the biggest impact?
I am a member of The Kabankalan City Host Lions Club in Southern Negros Occidental in the Philippines. We sent a contingent to the North of our island to distribute disaster relief.I am a member of the Lions Club. Along with our effort to eliminate blindness we have the Lions Club International Foundation that responds with funds for disaster relief. The local clubs apply for relief and provide relief to the local area. Quite often it is some of the first relief on site. I was reading today that the Cebu Lions were distributing food and assistance in the area. Other Lions Clubs will be doing the same thing.
