The Old Folks Home

I go on and off it all year as needed. Definitely a shower every night helps wash all the dander off. I know when I have spent too much time around the horses too-- get clogged up . . . . all started just a few years ago. Oh well . . .
That is good. We switch up with allergy meds now and then.

I just read a lengthy article on heart disease and primary prevention in women.

One startling set of facts:
Breast cancer killed 40,000 women in USA last year and $678 million dollars was spent on research.
Heart disease killed 411,000 women in USA last year and only $173 million dollars was spent on research.

I am not saying we should divert money from breast cancer but imagine the breakthroughs if a proportional amount was allocated to stop women dying of heart disease.

My Department participated in the Women wear red for heart disease promotion. It has not been that long that the Medical Community has recognized that Heart Disease is a major killer of women.

Thank you for reminding us.

Quote: I am from a long line of women with inherent breast cancer. BOTH heart disease and cancers can be reduced by eating a better diet, and moderate exercise. BUT there is too much money to be had in "research" to look at these simple solutions seriously. Dana-Farber was interested in doing a "food" study but I don't know if it got off the ground. Lots of money to be made in treating cancers and heart attacks-- but the tide is turning. Diet and moderate exercise is the number one change all people can easily make but choose not to. People wait until they have cancer or have a heart attack to change their ways. We have wonder fruits and veg in the market all year long-- walking for an hour 4-5 times a week is pretty easy---

I am part of the new generation trying to prevent cancer and prevent a heart attack. Off to Dana -Farber in a few minutes. Hate BOston, Hate the traffic. . . . . prevention is hard work too. Seeing my mother with chemo brain--- we need more prevention. THe plus is that she is has lived almost 20 more years than her mother. I'm hoping she can get to the 100 mark, and so am I.

That's where, for me, the chickens come in. I am a closet agoraphobe and if left to my own devises I would stay holed up in the house for months at a time, but with the chickens I have been getting out in the yard more, working in my garden more and in the winter, which in the past was an excuse not to venture out, I am still spending most of the day doing chicken chores...outside. The more I go outside the easier it becomes to go elsewhere...I even went camping a few times this year...and din't stay in the camper the whole time.

Chickens are a great stress release for sure! They do help with exercise and those that are not Mas Fuerte can raise them--as opposed to other livestock.

It is great to hear that you are getting out more!

Heart disease in women started increasing as more women entered the workplace and acquired the same stress as men had always had. Another contribution is the American diet and our collective migration away from wholesome home cooked 3 squares a day made from unpackaged, unprocessed foods.

Research on all types of cancer is a cash cow for the cancer society. If 1/100th was spent on prevention we would actually make a dent in the incidences. The cure research hasn't made an impact at all.

Just my soapbox moment.

Heart disease in women started increasing when women started to matter in society and became more in control of their own outcomes. They simply got a better diagnosis. There is still a long way to go though.

And there is my pair of pennies worth.
