The Old Folks Home

Arielle Do you have any of the big chain stores near you? Our Walmart & Costco have blood pressure testing machines people can use for free. The doctor always told me to take the pressure 3 x and then the average is your score.

Okay I'm not good at math, so I take it three times and the reading I like best, is the one I record. Usually the first reading is HIGH, I hate the cuff getting so tight. By the 2nd. time it drops a bit, and the third time is usually the reading I write down.

To be honest I've had nurses that didn't know what the heck they were doing. Also nurses that said they couldn't hear any sounds when taking my bp. Same with them taking my pulse.

I told them I purposely stopped my heart just to spook them.

OK, you guys officially have me spooked. I'm younger the ya all and my pressure runs 120/80 + every time I check it. I'm not old enough for regular checkups an absolute necessity so haven't seen any doc since my last pregnancy, about 4 yrs ago. What age should a person start watching this closely?
Our AMerican diets are a death sentence. Add the vegies and dump most of the high carb "foods". When I was s swimmer, young and an hour a day in the pool, my numbers were good. Fast forward ____ decades. and the arteries have some damage. We eat a diet that causes high levels of insulin-- meaning we secrete a lot more insulin a day than the diet of 100 yrs ago. THat insulin damages the lining of the arteries. Change the diet and it can repair to some degree depending on the level of damage. Many doc are not going for by pass sugery anymore. Increase the exercise and change the diet.

I suspect I may be deficent in K, Mg and salt. Will get on my supplements and then go for a visit. I get a lot of leg cramps IF my salt intake is less than 1-2 tsp a day. I tend to eat a diet that is a diuretic and it pulls out a lot of sodium. I haven't been diligenly supplementing my intake -- me bad.

most diets and diuretics dont pull out sodium. ACE inhibitors may impact sodium secretion.

1 tsp of seas salt is 2400mg salt. 2 tsp is a boatload. You should look at increasing potassium and magnesium if your kidneys are ok.

The best thing to do is to get a home blood pressure monitor. There is a list of ones that are accurate but the best thing to do is to take it with you to the Doctors office and have it verified by them.

Yes, you should monitor your blood pressure at much younger ages than you would think. If you do not have heart problems, yo are likely fine.

Bye,

Ron

Are you going somewhere?

BP - no such thing as too early to begin keeping track of it. Worked in a Coronary Care Unit for a few years, saw my share of people way too young, die. Life is shorter than we think it is. You may or may not be able to alter the age at which you die, but you can always alter how you live every minute you have.

Thanksgiving recipe that I've modified a bit to make it taste better to us, is adding tabasco to green bean casserole. I have also learned that homemade cranberry sauce with orange peel and juice added, then run through the KitchenAid strainer, is really good on toast - like, so much better than I would ever have imagined! I also learned from Alton Brown last year that thawing and brining at the same time in a cooler with ice makes an exceptional turkey. Here it took four days to thaw, and I added some ice every day, but oh my, that was the best turkey I've roasted in a very long time. Last tip - a potato ricer makes extremely smooth mashed potatoes.

Anyone have an exceptional cornbread recipe?

Oz - safe travels, great hatches, and excellent hugs wished for you.

Ok, there are a couple of you that are going to smack me on my patties after saying this.

I've known so many people/families that have eaten wrong all their lives, just to live into their 80's and 90's. And I mean wrong! Everything we are told not to eat, they ate. Fat into the skillet. Butter on toast, butter in the hot cereal..and lots of sugar. Nice thick creamy milk. A lot of eggs. Most of them were, or are, on another side of my family. So, I'm really thinking longevity is a real thing..as in genetics. My sister's family all live into their 90's, not just a kidding here. I ate the food that her grandmother cooked..(my half sister) and I remember all of that bacon..almost every morning. My husbands mother always had a beef roast and rolls with lots of mayo in the house. Her and his dad both lived into their 80's. His dad ate a lot..a lot of candy. Those drs. must have been giving them something right to keep them alive. Unless eating that way isn't so bad for you after all? Who really knows? I used to diet often, I have read so many different things about how this is good for you, and this isn't, then read where yes it was good for you and that wasn't. ??

Hey oz, hope you have a safe trip. :)

I gave up years ago, worrying about what I ate. A good friend from school who was a health nut and a runner passed away in his early 50's. Heard of several other people who know of the same thing with someone they knew/grew up with. Eat, Drink, and be Marry!!
