The Old Folks Home

No real sports fans at my house.

My dad, now - that's quite a different story. As has become our tradition, we trekked to my parents' house yesterday, for a sort of belated Thanksgiving celebration. The NC State game he was sort of watching was a bit of a disappointment, so he didn't even have the sound up. As good as it was to spend time together, our day was somewhat marred by the absence of some family members - my older brother and his wife weren't there. She has been hospitalized with "some sort of obstruction" (sorry, but that's all the information I have) and is probably going to have surgery sometime within the next couple of days. Your prayers would be appreciated.

I baked bread on Friday--three loaves. My Oldest daughter talked me into cutting up part of one loaf to make stuffing for a turkey I am cooking today. I sliced the whole loaf and and put the part I did not use for stuffing into the freezer. My Youngest daughter told me that she preferred the bread sliced up like that.

I now have to slice the bread for them--They have a hard time and would rather eat store bread instead.

I think I need to work with them on slicing bread. They really need that skill right?

They do need that skill, and I can say after slicing my own bread for two years now I still don't have it perfected LOL. A good bread knife makes a difference. I know you can buy those slicing guide things you set the loaf into and it guides your knife for even slices, but I've never tried one so I don't know whether they really work all that well.

I'm with SCG, no matter how challenging, homemade has it all over store bought, and you always know what you're eating (and not eating).

Quote: A cold loaf and a good knife and practice!! lol

I used to bake bread for years-- gave it up when I went low carb. So now my kids like the store bought stuff too. As a wrok around, I let them pick out breads from the bakery seconds pile and that has encouraged them to try "home made". We use thHe commercial sliced bread make sandwhiches for school much easier. ANd the bakery loafs for french toast-- and yes, the slices are often a mess. THe denser breads seem to be easier to slice straigh (er) .

Heck, even I'm not good at slicing bread, but I dislike store bread. What's your secret to good slicing?

It's snowing here, very peaceful looking. I like it when it snows on weekends and not enough that I have to shovel it!

I have a bread knife like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Dexter-Russel...85915044&sr=8-4&keywords=sanisafe+bread+knife

One trick is to warm the knife by touching it to the loaf to warm it up when slicing warm bread out out of the oven.

A second trick it to turn large loaves onto the side.

I love home made bread.
