The Old Folks Home

Good morning all. Here with my coffee and a little quiet time before the family gets up, they get to sleep in on Sundays. We are having yet another wind storm up here in the lovely PNW..it is raining and the wind is making the rain come down sideways. I want to go outside and do a good spring clean up in my garden but it is just too windy and rainy to do so. I have to take a friend to the airport in a few hours and maybe when I get home it will be calmer out there and I can get something done.
What are you doing today?

Edited because I am embarrassed to use the word to, too, and two incorrectly. :)

My google chrome crashed. NO idea how to create the connections to it. Tried Explorer and that was a trial. Now trying foxfire. AND IT"S WORKING!!!!! I can actually leave a msg!!

Linda-- hope you continue to feel better. Lots of creatures showering you with their love and affection-- that should aid in your recovery. You have wonderful friends in those furry and fluffy butts.

Arielle,

I finally went to firefox some time ago and I have had no trouble since then. I really like it. It might not have all the bells and whistles that MS puts in theirs but it has been very reliable.

SCG I'm getting punished for scoffing at your reverse snow psychology. Monday was supposed to be some rain, icy precip. Thanks to me they have changed that to snow from 6 am to 6pm Monday with SEVERAL INCHES expected and snow rates from 1 1/2 "to 2 "an hour.
I apologize profusely for my attitude. Grandma was right - she said if you made fun of someone, it would happen to you.

What I like best about firefox is that it has spell check built right in.

And... my scheming worked a bit. Only got about 2 inches of snow. Beats 6-10 and upwards of 15 in some spots.

YEah--- only a few inches here too-- more coming mid week. THe first big storm I cleared everything way back, just in case, and good thing as the next snow was a wet heavy snow and the best I could do was just a little wider than the cars--feels like a luge track !! Scary.

Clearing snow-- overseeing boy scout projects-- hanging wet laundry inside ( it helps boost the low humidity!) Kids want to make snow shoes!

Quote: I'm all for reliable!! I don't miss bells and whistles if I never used them-- or didn't know they existed. lol

SCG you better get another scheme together. There is another one coming your way. It is supposed to get to us around 1 am. It is supposed to be a fast moving storm but we are supposed to get 1/4 inch of ice in this part of the state and the northeast part is supposed to get 7 1/2 inches or more of snow/ice mix. They are saying it will be out of here by noon tomorrow and probably get to you by Tuesday morning would be my guess. On the plus side the temps tomorrow afternoon are supposed to be in the 40's so the ice shouldn't last long. I sure hope the ice doesn't last because we have hundreds of hickory and oak trees here. That could be a mess!

Wonderful looking eggs Ron. You have a busy day for sure. I love it. I just have 4 Americana hens. I wish I could have more but I live just inside the city limits in a country town so I am at my limit. It sounds like you have a great system going there. I hope you all get some of the rain you need down there. I will look into your breakfast recipe, I need to try some new things for my family, they would like a different breakfast for a change I'm sure.

Thank you for sharing.

My youngest child is going off to college this fall and after 33+ years of having kids/teenagers and loads of their friends in my house my husband and myself are going to be empty nesters. Except that we have hens, tropical birds, dogs, cats, and fish. I am taking classes on beekeeping and starting on my dream of getting my Master Gardeners License. I feel sad that my children will be all gone, but I am looking forward to it too. Have any of you dealt with this issue yet? Did you have trouble adjusting? Did you just keep busy so you didn't have to think about it too hard? I don't know if that is what I am doing but it feels right to me. I just want to know where my gold watch is for my retirement as a full time mom...lol
My daughter (eldest) moved to Chicago for college and dance when she was only 17. More recently, both kids moved out within 3 months of each other. That was weird. After a year, my daughter moved back in for a few months to save up for her trip. It doesn't bother me but I do miss how the kids were when they were pre-teens.
My wife cried really hard when my daughter left this time. I don't remember it being that hard on her when DD went to college or to Europe.
I stay busy so maybe that's it.

Sate Babi - Pork Satay Being Balinese Hindu the locals are proud of their pigs - the only place in Indonesia you can find them

Many many years ago, the husband of Ibu (mother) pictured below with Mrs Oz, along with his 4 beautiful daughters and son met me on the top of a volcano in Java. I Gusti Ngurah Alit, the little prince of Penebel became an instant soul mate of mine and he informed me within minutes of us meeting that we were brothers in a past life but forever and a day, he would consider me his son. I have been a part of this amazing family ever since. Of course I could no longer chase my princess sisters lol.

Why do you always post food pictures when I'm hungry?

Perhaps I just get hungry when I see beautiful food.

...

It took a couple of minutes, but I got a halter on Genesee and headed back to the gate between the pastures. Sure enough, the others followed - all 6 of them. So when I got to the gate, I had 7 horses rearranging each other around me (and occasionally bumping into me) as I struggled to open the gate (which is usually a 2-hand-job). Finally I got the gate open, and fished Genesee through it. By carefully timing the opening and closing of the gate, I managed to get only the horses I wanted through it. When all three were back where they belonged, I latched the gate, and went back to cleaning the stalls.

But apparently, I wasn't as done as I thought I was. Later that afternoon, one of the other boarders called me. As he had driven past the barn, he had seen Mo, Brady, Latte and Sunny milling about in the barn aisle. Evidently, I had forgotten to latch the gate between the barn and the big pasture when I went out to get the horses, and of course, I had gone back in through the gate to the other pasture. All of the horses in that pasture know how to hook their chins over the gate to open it, and they all had. The boarder had stopped and put the horses back where they belonged; fortunately, the gate between the barn and the parking lot was securely closed.

And that was just Thursday!

Isn't it fun being busy?

We usually had about 7 horses when I was growing up. They never caused much trouble but it was the pigs that always got where they shouldn't. My dad had a huge problem building pig proof pens. It seemed like I had to chase pigs every day. They don't herd very well.

I spent the morning helping my Dad move and the afternoon building a new ground run. It is made from 2x2 treated lumber and 1/2 inch hardware cloth. Overall it is 4x4x2H with two hinged 1x4 doors in the top and open on the bottom. I will use it like a tractor to grow out chicks. It will be the step between the brooder and the coop. I really like it and will likely make another one tomorrow.

Good job. Just make sure nothing that loves the taste of chicken can get underneath.

I have firefox, went to it a few years back. Love it!

I don't start with firefox but usually end up putting it on every computer. I'm using IE for BYC but have to use firefox for yahoo mail. It hates IE on my computer for some reason.

Daughter posted some pictures of Kuang Si waterfall.
She said it was "really cold, with little fishes nibbling at your feet, but a good swim — "

Now she's off to Vang Vieng.

Last night’s storm spared most of the area with only very light accumulations. A slight shift in track and slightly weaker storm explain why many towns in Southern and Central Maine received a few inches of of snow. Some midcoast communities are near a half foot. Eastern Maine on the other hand is getting hit hard by the storm early this morning. As of 6:30 AM, Eastport is reporting nearly 17” of snow.

I'm guessing Eastport also scoffed at my reverse snow psychology. Suckers!

Although, I'd rather get a foot of snow than any amount of ice. Good luck to ya.

Yup, we're supposed to get it again on Tuesday and Wednesday (and in the 10 day forecast, again on Sunday and Tuesday). I'm not sure the snow is going to fall for my faked excitement again this time. Maybe I'll try to psych it out by starting seeds or something.

I love how you preview my weather for me. Thank you.

Also, Ron, thanks for the recipe. We may try that tomorrow.

As far as my weekend plans - nothing exciting. At some point I need to go shovel the chickens out. I was thinking with only 2 inches of snow they'd brave it, but nooooo. They're all standing in the door waiting for mom to come shovel it so they don't ruin their pedicures or something. The turkeys were out in it first thing. There's something about being stupid that makes them brave. Then I have some sewing projects to finish up on. A guy at work wants a nail belt (I made the mistake of making a funny one for one of the contractors, and now another contractor wants one... but they take excellent care of my service so it's not a big deal, about an hour start to finish) and then a girl at work that just had a baby wants me to try and make her some nursing pads because the ones at the store apparently don't fit that well. And my dad wants some straps for his kitchen chair cushions because they keep sliding off the chair. And if I have any time left I'll make some more squares for my quilt, I've got about 1/3 made. The fabric for my friends wedding quilt should be here Tuesday or Wednesday so I'd like to have these projects wrapped up if possible by then. BF got a new video game on Friday so I'm on my own!
