Don't worry Bamadude, you didn't kill a thread. Killing a thread is when someone posts on an active thread and the thread suddenly becomes inactive. It may or may not even be because of what the last person posted, it's just an expression.

You didn't bring Oz bad luck, either, although your statement about the twist in the story was prophetic. Oz will adapt and overcome, just another bump in the road on his adventure. No worries.

THe mason bees are very helpful and little appreciated. We tolerate all the bees and wasps, except those that nest in the metal gates. THOSE get exterminated!!! THeir sting hurts. BUggers.
When we moved into this house, the air space between the second floor ceiling and the flat roof was full of wasps. This is no exaggeration, there must have been millions.
It's not exactly an attic. The roof has a slight slope toward the back which is where the only gutter is so the whole roof drains into that 20' stick of gutter. In the front there's about 3' between the rafters and the ceiling joists. In the back near the gutter there's only about 5". The joists and rafters are nominal 2X18. The walls are a triple layer of brick. Where the interior plaster has been replaced with drywall, there's a gap all the way from the roof space to the cellar. There was no insulation in the roof so in the winter that space stayed fairly warm as my hard earned gas heated air rose through that space. On warm winter days the wasps would get active. Occasionally they'd work their way down into the walls and come out into rooms through the sash holes in the old double hung windows. They got so bad that I finally bombed them by going through the access hole in my son's bedroom. There was a line of dead and dying wasps along both sides and the back of the house as well as along most of the cellar walls. Some places the wasps were stacked 3 deep.
It didn't kill all of them and I had to do that every year.
Finally I replaced the roof and took the opportunity to insulate. I also put screen on the inside of the ornate wrought iron wall vents. Problem solved and the heating/cooling cost came down.

Wow ChickenCanoe! Your farm sounds perfect to me! I just can't move any further north, I'm not far, but it gets too cold HERE to me! I love the sound of Canucks's place, but I just couldn't do it! I love all your fruit trees! We have pants, that aren't doing good, so we'll have to prune in the fall (we just moved here last July) and blueberry trees, a pomegranate, a fig, some strawberries just planned last year, and some grape vines that need some work.
All the garden stuff and chickens are crammed into the back 2/3 of the acre parcel.

Good news, today is the first day I have not come home to a dead chick.....my job is an hour away and I fret the whole way after having the first death on Tuesday. The brooder is in a tiny bathroom sitting in the bath tub. I have the heat lamp about 3ft above the brooder box. The one I did not expect to make it, is closer because I have been wetting it to de-mat it. I am letting it go now because it seems to be getting a lot out itself. It keeps scratching its head and I think that is because of the matting. I want to put it in the box with the others but am afraid they will pick on it, though when I put other chicks with him/her, it pecks them really hard. I have turned the heat lamp off for awhile because I noted they were really warm when I picked the chicks up for butt inspection. . Do you think I should turn on the bathroom exhaust fan? Any other suggestions...Please?

My best advice is to get them outside where they can have more space. Except for this past January when it was below zero so long, my chicks go out when they come out of the hatcher. Fresh air is as vital as food and fresh water.

I am just jealous that you all live in the south! Wish I were there with you expecting more of this next week

I'm only jealous when it's minus 10 Fahrenheit here. At least we usually don't get tornadoes that time of year.

Here in the Sacramento valley we get:

Not too much rain though. There will not be many:

We are currently under a voluntary 20% water ration. Farmers get 0% allocation of water for irrigation. Well drillers are very busy!
We had 3 days of incredible wind this week. I couldn't keep anything nailed down.
Bummer on the water allocation. It's been pretty dry here, I've had to water the garden a few times this week.

I'm off to feed and water and then go teach my 4 hour chicken class at the community college downtown.

DH just arrived home early from work and is taking a few days off-- shingles. Fortunately I've already had chickenpx and the kids are vaccinated. but I think I will call the pediatricians office for more in formation regarding what to expect with known exposure.

Gotta put a pot of chicken soup on!
Get hubby vaccinated for shingles. It will make the next outbreak milder if nothing else. If they try to tell you he can only get them once, give them my email and I will connect to my dr. My second round was much milder thanks to the vaccination. Hope he does better soon. Shingles are no fun.

morning everyone!
I rarely have anything to add to all you "youngins"here but I love following all the adventures anyway. Sorry for the little "girl" turning into a little roo

My crazy Aussie roo Max has finally managed to ""get his crow on" which he now does A LOT

Thank you for the advice. I am sure a broody would have them outside by now. Since I am in the suburbs I cannot let them out. (Not to be having chickens here.) DH is picking them up this week and taking them back to SC where they can be in a pen and get fresh air and exposure to the environment. They are doing well this morning. I am going to give them a tomato to peck at. Is it too early to give them garlic and add ACV to their water?

when do they suggest you get the vaccination. I know they offer it at the pharmacies around here but I was not sure when it is recommended. I get the flu shot because of working in an office with people who have kids around and they choose not to get it. Also my mom worked in a hospital administration before she retired and she said the nurses told her that it is good to have it so if there is a rare virus going around like with the H1N1 a few years ago they can rule out the flu and get to the real problem.

Also:

We get a ton of wind in the foothills. Too though not as much as the west side of the Valley we can get winds over 70 miles and hour from time to time. We get twice as much rain as Sacramento though only a hour away. We get snow too though this year only twice. Its also much cooler. Rarely getting to a hundred though we do get a lot of 90's here. When Sacramento is 110 we are usually 100 but with all the trees it cools down quicker.
