The Old Folks Home

@getaclue Yeah, those movie merchandise dolls can be pretty flimsy. It's amazing what kind of junk you can sell just with the name of a popular movie.

I have to say, the movie itself was pretty entertaining though. I told the neighbor's kid we had watched Monsters University with Karin, he thought it was really strange that two adults watched cartoons together

Take the top off, spritz with clean water and go do chicken chores. When finished, but not more than two hours, check to make sure the eggs are dry and then put the top back on. Do this from day 8 to lockdwn.

There have been studies and this method will increase hatch rate. It makes the chicks hatch better too. I just did this with shipped CCL eggs 7 or 8 fertile eggs hatched a day early.

Is this done in addition to the regular humidity?

My mother loved to travel the south when I was a kid. She once bought a book of southern humor and I still remember one of the jokes.
A social worker visited a sharecroppers home. She asked the elderly man, "Do you have any stocks or bonds and if so, what are their denominations?"
He said, "I have some chickens, a team of horses, a cow and my barn is in fair shape. I don't know if they have any denominations but if they do, I'm sure they're Baptist."

Love these!

Very interesting, thank you for sharing. I've had quite a few strange defects happen during hatching, but nothing like that. Each time I'm amazed at what can go right (or wrong). Did the university end up taking it?
They haven't e-mailed me yet. I have it frozen for the time being.

I have got to make something this year to draw attention to flu season. If you were with us last year you saw the Vaccination Vixen outfit complete with knee high boots, red cape and mask:

This year I've got to come up with something equally as funny to draw attention (and thus interest) to the roving carts of flu vaccine for staff and patients.

Anyone have any fine ideas?
Very cute.

... They are your greatest joy but they are also your greatest sorrows at times.
Oh so true.

Down here we would say "Well bless your heart".
I think it's Bill Engvall, of blue collar comedy fame that said, "you can say anything you want about someone as long as you follow it up with - 'Bless his heart'."

..

Now.... Cuteness:
25 of them.

Nice.

Ooooo! I didn't see the roosting bar you have there. That is soooo neat!
It's not a roosting bar, that's the automatic water nipple system. I have to add more but the 1/2,1/2,1/8" tee fittings were out of stock. They're supposed to be here Tuesday.

I'll add a low roost in a couple weeks. I usually don't hatch this time of year except with broody hens so this is really strange. Putting day old chicks in the coop with no heat source. Close to 100 during the day and doesn't get out of the 80s at night. Inside the coop is warmer with all those bodies. We're supposed to cool down next week but I probably still won't give them heat.
What? Defrost? Huh? Didn't I get an auto-defrost?

Huh? Am I supposed to do cleaning or maintenance? Again, huh?

Me do no do such thing called "cleaning" or "maintenance" I do not know these words that you use.

Those without auto defrost are cheaper and more efficient - until you have to defrost.
Gads! Do you think that was caused by genetics or their food? Maybe environment? I'm grasping at straws. I've never seen that and I hope I never do!
Sometimes out of range temperatures in the incubator can cause malformations as well as inadequate turning, jarring eggs, storing small end up, breeder disease, inadequate nutrition but I don't think a third leg growing from the tail would be one of those malformations.

Its nice. The bed is hard as a rock. Its 4am and i have a massive hangover

Consequences of vacation.

Dinner at the Tree House last night and my son was the head chef.

We ordered

Soup of the Moment - cold cucumber

Tree House Seasonal Salad
romaine, organic mixed greens, roasted sweet potatoes, shitake mushrooms, toasted Brussels sprouts, candied walnuts and pecans with a maple vinaigrette

Johnny Cake
masa, black beans, seasonal vegetables, chimichurri and malagueta sauce garnished with house made escabeche

Chile Relleno
roasted poblano chile, Chihuahua cheese, panko, salsa sofrito, fresh herb salad

(the sauces were made with the chilies I grew)

The Vietnamese owner came up and told us we did a good job with him. He's given his two week notice and she's going to miss him.
I think he'll miss it too, he'll be going back to making Welsh pub food where he was a kitchen manager. School starts for him Monday.
