The Old Folks Home

Ron, sorry you lost the BA from Hupp Farms. I went to Home Depot before the heat got bad, and got a couple of their brand of fans. The round floor ones. They move a good bit of air. I slid those between the roof, and the top wire on the coop, pointing downward, over the pens in the coop. They do a very good job of keeping the pens cool. When it gets too hot, the chickens come in from the run, and sit under the fan area. I haven't lost any from heat, and we've had similar temperatures to yours. I understand about the water in the hose being hot. I have to run the water from the hose a couple minutes before it gets cool enough to refill the water buckets.

tn, I like Ihop too. I'm very glad Maddy is doing so well. I bet she's glad to get out of that hospital environment, even if she can't go home yet.

That is good that some people can use them, I sure wanted to. I even tried making more and larger holes but the water still was to hot.
I know the heat can kill them and it is horrible! I had a pullet hollering and groaning in the coop so loud one day last week that I knew when I saw her she was to hot to move. So I opened the door and hosed them all down to cool them off! I felt she would have died if I hadn't.
Man if it were be I would try to use a hose with the sprinkler holes in it or make on and put a fan behind it! That would mist all the birds and keep them cool! Or make one of those ice chest coolers with a fan. (the red neck a/c). lol But what ever works!
why not get a few rolls of aluminum foil and lightly wrap your water hose?

I don't know how you southerners and westerners do it, but it's only 82 and I'm seriously about to die. It is too hot for pants. I don't own any shorts, but BF's boxers work well in a pinch.

I been known to make shorts while still wearing the sacrificial pants.... Actually in extreme heat its best if you stay clothed. Loose cotton preferrably to allow your own sweat to do the job. But keeping clothed keeps you from dehydrating too fast.

Diet changes too help you cope. Lots of veggies (natural electrolytes)... and spice... peppers with capcacian help thin the blood and allow for less stress when you get hot.

Most importantly... Throw routine out the window that you are used to. When its hot chill out with a glass of iced tea take a nap and keep cool till it cools down.

When i am up at the house work gets done at dawn and at dusk. Believe it or not I dont have AC at my house. I do have a swamp cooler for the whole house... and I have a single window cooler for those occasional above 100 days...

The low humidity here is key to survival... there were a couple days in January here where the humidity was in the single digits.... But most times its around 15-20 percent.

If you look at the Bedouins they are clothed from head to toe.... Its like a walking ac unit... Albeit 98.6 degrees but when you are in an environment close to 140 degrees thats cool.

For what its worth.... its not the actual water that chills things down... its the process of evaporation. Hot water will evaporate quicker...

The catch though is if the air is already saturated with moisture or humidity... water evaporates slower.

My dad was a pilot I asked him which was better a hot day or a cold day for flying. He said a hot HUMID day... because you can barely get enough air to provide lift. So on a hot humid day there is less Air also to breathe... another addition to stress.
