The Old Folks Home

Ron, they're a lot closer than New York and San Fransisco. I don't mind a bit of driving either, a month ago we drove 700km in a day just to attend a dog trial.

By the way, can I drive in the States with a European drivers license?

DH and I are totally frustrated with the house/property hunting. We did make an appointment to go see one this Saturday, though. We learned that each, and every listing HAS to be checked on the County Appraisers website. Example: 10 acres $149,000.00. Not a bad price for our locale. Upon further checking, 2 acres are dry, 8 acres are wetlands (swamp). That's a lot of money for 2 acres. One of the best ones I read was 28 acres for $400,000.00 - 13 acres high, and dry. Upon investigating further, the rest of the property was a lake. Assuming this is a lake they've dug on the property (NEVER ASSUME, right?) a 15 acre lake seems a bit much, but ok you will own a lake. NOT. It's not a man made lake, and you don't own it. Instead of saying lakefront property, or lake access, this idiot is charging for land at the bottom of the lake. Moving along, new home on about 4.5 acres for $190,000, Nice looking home, good amount of property, decent price. They had not put in the flooring, so you could choose color, and material. Upon further investigation, they built the home in a flood zone. It was dry when they started building, so they didn't bother hauling in dirt, or building a stilt home. When it rained, the home flooded. They removed the damaged flooring. They had to. The next listing was the home next door to that one, was the same price, and in the same condition. Yes, they still sell swamp land in Florida, and you can own it for the right price.

@ChickenCanoe Not boring, you just clearly love your hometown. I think it's admirable.
Most folks find us boring and that's just the way we like it. To us it's anything but. This morning I was propped on the backporch rail with my morning coffee watching two wild turkey hens "babysitting" their broods of two dozen half grown chicks as they jumped around chasing grasshoppers at the edge of our tall grass meadow just beyond our chicken run. Overhead the cranes were heading for their morning munch on the oatfield at the end of our 1/4 mile driveway. Suddenly I hear the turkey hens cluck the alarm and all the chicks dive into the tall grass and my girls freeze from their efforts trying to get into my herb garden. I look up in time to see big female Eagle high in the thermals over the field. She moves on, the all clear is sounded and the peaceful scene returns.
Well, until my crazy Aussie pullets decide it's time to stretch their wings and come flying toward the house like a bomber squadron and send everybody scattering!!

ROFLMBO I was just telling my husband today that sometimes when I look in the mirror I am startled by that old, ugly woman looking back at me. We, several of us in this thread, must be on the same wavelength today.

Not ugly. Some of us are getting a bit rustic though. Recently I posted a picture without a hat and my cousin who I haven't seen in years said I see you have that Cotton hair line. Her daddy was bald as long as I remember and so was our grandfather.

I just checked the average temps there per month - that was probably a pretty hot trip.
I seem to recall it was 120 in the shade. There's no shade. We had a 63 Ford Galaxie convertible with AC. Even with the AC it was hot. My dad was worried we wouldn't make it through the valley so we sometimes shut the AC down and stopped to check the radiator. We never broke down but plenty of other cars didn't make it. There's a nice little oasis type area at the end of the valley but even there it was sooo hot.

Yes! Napa and Yosemite are not close by car or as the crow flies.

There is a lot to see in the Bay Area; up and down the coast. Another thing to see that is closer to Napa is Lake Tahoe. You can also take a camping tour up hwy. 89 from Tahoe to the Oregon Boarder and never leave the mountains. Mt. Lassen is there too. It is an active volcano with mud pots and sulfur works. There is a guide book for this trip with places to say and things to see.

We camped at Tahoe on the same trip. Very hot there too but at least there was water. I thought that it was strange they planted a bunch of little trees throughout the campgrounds and had an irrigation ditch winding through the grounds passing by each tree. They'd fill the ditch with water a couple times a day. A fake oasis in the desert.
I imagine by now, the trees are actually providing shade.

Not a problem

The guy trying to sell the field next to me is advertising it as 4.2 acres. Zoning requires 1 acre lots minimum. Turns out, he's counting the ground all the way to the middle of the road, without that, it's 3.8 acres. Only 3 homesites as opposed to 4. Deceptive advertising for sure. How do they get away with that?

Sounds heavenly.
Peace and quiet, other than animal sounds are awesome.

Welcome to the new folks, Michael O'Shay, TNTchix, and Rrrmamma!

Tnspursfan, Maddy looks great! I'm so glad she made it through so well and I hope everyone works out better this time! I agree with whoever said that it's her attitude that made all the difference! She knew she would do just fine and was determined to do so! And X1000 on how adorable she is!

Thank you getaclue!

CC, that's a great photo the hen trying to cover 50 chicks, how cute!

So chicken question? My two hens that just started to lay are in with my younger chicks that won't lay till November and about four young roosters. I was trying to give oyster shell to my hens and since I usually feed treats to the others, they thought it was treats and were eating it up! How do I stop the young ones and roosters from eating too much calcium???

Put the OS in a separate container, preferably next to the feeder or nests.
The hens will find it. Anything thrown on the ground will be picked up by the little buggers.
I use these for OS and grit in the one pint size.

I just bought a bunch of these from Pinnon Hatch Farms in the pint and 3 qt. sizes.

The brackets are a better design. I got the larger ones for fermented feed for individuals and pairs.

Yes, I am in FL. We are looking to purchase a home, or land and put a home. At first glance, it seemed we had some good options, however, after careful investigation it seems our options are ,much more limited than we thought. It used to be illegal here to misrepresent property. Now, not so much, or it's too costly, and time consuming to sue the seller. Too, the county politicos have allowed misrepresentation at times because it lined their pockets.
