Lethal white/fatal white: Happens when a foal is born pure white (no additional markings). For some reason their digestive systems are inadequate and they perish. If I remember correctly, the most common occurrence of lethal white is when breeding two homozygous paint/pinto horses together... Every once in a while a sad occasion in the birthing barn. Most breeding contracts for paints have a rebreed clause "in the event of," although IMHO why would you want to gamble on that again?

Lethal White Overo (LWO or "Frame") is one particular pinto pattern; there are several others. The classic frame pattern is easy to spot, but not all horses with the LWO gene have that pattern - some may have just a tiny bit of white on face or feet. Fortunately, there is now a test for
LWO, and a responsible breeder will know whether their horse is LWO+ before they breed it. If so, breeding to a horse that is LWO- avoids the risk.

It is possible to get a solid white horse from at least one other pinto breeding - the max white sabino. That doesn't carry a risk of death of the foal. You can get a mostly white foal from Splash, too, though there is a risk of deafness if the white on the horse extends to the area of its ears.

That's very interesting. The relationship of colour and genetic weakness ( deafness etc) is seen in a lot of animals. Like merle to merle breeding in Aussie. Shepard's.

White cats too, especially if they have one blue eye and one green eye. I also knew a black family when I was in the military who had a daughter with a blue eye and a green eye who was deaf. Deafness is something you have to watch for in Dalmation dogs too. Again a link to white coats and spotting.

There has been found a link between animals and people with dichromic eyes (where the eye has multiple color) and intestinal problems. People with dichromic eyes are more likely to develop Crohne's disease.

Oh bummer my losers son has an eye like that. I will have to pay attention to that as he grows....

Yeah I'm hungry again too... Something about this thread sandwiches, horses, genetic anomalies just makes you want to eat.
