Lethal White Overo (LWO or "Frame") is one particular pinto pattern; there are several others. The classic frame pattern is easy to spot, but not all horses with the LWO gene have that pattern - some may have just a tiny bit of white on face or feet. Fortunately, there is now a test forLethal white/fatal white: Happens when a foal is born pure white (no additional markings). For some reason their digestive systems are inadequate and they perish. If I remember correctly, the most common occurrence of lethal white is when breeding two homozygous paint/pinto horses together... Every once in a while a sad occasion in the birthing barn. Most breeding contracts for paints have a rebreed clause "in the event of," although IMHO why would you want to gamble on that again?
That's very interesting. The relationship of colour and genetic weakness ( deafness etc) is seen in a lot of animals. Like merle to merle breeding in Aussie. Shepard's.
White cats too, especially if they have one blue eye and one green eye. I also knew a black family when I was in the military who had a daughter with a blue eye and a green eye who was deaf. Deafness is something you have to watch for in Dalmation dogs too. Again a link to white coats and spotting.
There has been found a link between animals and people with dichromic eyes (where the eye has multiple color) and intestinal problems. People with dichromic eyes are more likely to develop Crohne's disease.
