The Old Folks Home

Alaskan - don't let them pick on you!

They don't understand us northern "rural" folk. Function is far more of a priority to us than form. Primarily because no body can see it under the snow most of the year anyway!!!

Form should always follow function. I don't have any evergreens for screening on the perimeter of the property in back so I need to rebuild one coop in a more attractive design. It was a quick build that was only supposed to last a year or 2. That was 5 years ago and worked great till mink arrived for the first time ever.

I am havng to piece wood together for the perch....I have NO MORE wood that is long enough (7.5 feet).

But...close, close, very close!

You can attach one end to the wall and use another piece as a leg for the other end. I have one short building with several roosts on legs about 30" high.

Another option is to hang the roosts from the roof.

Bama, who gets up at 5.22? You're crazy...
I'm up and down with the chickens.
I usually get up between 3 and 5 but my phone alarm is set for 5:45. On Thursday's another alarm goes off at 6:50 to remind me to get the trash and recycle bin out before the trucks get here at 7.
Another daily alarm around dusk to make sure I double check all the coop doors, set traps and trail cams.

I fantasize about being able to sleep for two days straight.

Back when I worked 7/12s and had to switch shifts each week, I had the same fantasy.

Thats his church hat. We are baptists
There are Baptists in Alabama? Who knew?

We have rain!
Woo Hoo!!
It's starting to get dry here now. A couple weeks without rain but prior to that was a week with about 5"

I got really exhausted at all the bickering (and sometimes hatred) on the thread and decided to take a leave of absence.

It was busy here - new roof, getting the whole house painted, bunch of overnight visitors, sewing, crazy work, hiked the Grand Canyon...

A little birdie told me the nonsense has ended, and so I'm back.

Has your skunk population diminished? How are things going at home? Is BF okay too?

Got a few more skunks the last couple months and the neighbors have gotten some, too. Ran into a porcupine in the woods a few weeks ago - that was scary (but turned out just fine).

This morning I processed roosters so it's actually peaceful in the kingdom.

BF is just fine. Neither of us got a moose hunting permit this year, but he's going to go next weekend if the weather is fine to hopefully get us another deer.

Still have some chores to do before the snow starts flying, hopefully I'll get some of those off my list today.

GW pharmaceuticals is the big company that has been doing a lot of published research the past few years, to back up their new cannabis based drug Sativex. The head research dr Ethan Russo is a pretty good guy even if he is working for a pharmaceutical company, it was the only way to get the resources needed to get cannabanoid and terpenoid research further along worldwide. It's great to know a scientist like him is in the belly of the beast.

I've been talking to a good friend in the industry and we're going to start getting things set up for my own testing lab. Or I guess, a private testing lab for use of ppl approved by my little tribe/family thing that supports me, grows, genetics trading, helping hand etc.

I'm almost done trimming/harvesting my outdoor crop. Got the old broken dehuey out and the new dehuey tinkered with and hoisted up to the ceiling in the sealed indoor grow area. Gotta bring in the tall ladders to hang mylar. Definitely not my idea of weekend fun, hanging mylar on 14' vaulted ceilings/walls.

I have 6 roosters in the coop to caponize today. Or attempt to. They haven't been feed since yesterday morning. We need better light, and probably another person around if I'm to get a video or better pictures.

My ayam cemani roos came back yesterday. They were freaking out in the chicken er I have set up at the end of the cemani/haffie/slw brooder box in the barn. They are looking like they both have the potential to be fantastic roos, they wanted to get to their ladies so badly. I ended up having to put up a fabric divider to get them to calm down so they don't hurt themselves. I'll go take picts here soon to put in my thread about decrowing surgery in the flock management forum of them in a bit.

Their chests have been plucked, it looks odd.. that gray/dark skin under their feathers. They get to go back with their ladies on Halloween.

I have 5 more ac roos, should I get them decrowed instead of caponizing? I am getting so many ridiculous offers for my decrowed ayam cemani roosters, and these are not perfect colored boys, but they are the best 2 I have color wise until spring.

I'm looking forward to black meat capons though. I'm a bit crazy. But that's not a big secret lol.
