The Old Folks Home

For SCG, I found this cage trap cover that doubles as a skunk spray shield.

Omg, yes yes yes. Thank you. I betcha I could sew one, too. With little Pepe LePew outdoor fabrics...

Why not boil them whole ( after a good wash if your picky ) for a soup stock?

The directions I have for stock include taking off the toenail and outer skin and then using the resultant clean feet in your stock - source of beta carotene.

That being said, I usually look at the caked on poo and say not today.

As far as dumps go, ours discourages "picking" but there's a free swap shed that encourages swapping anything that could be re-used and the dump employees will rummage through your trash before (and after) you put it in the packer or open top to tell you to go throw something in the swap shed. My best swap shed grab was a nice plastic bucket with a rope top that was perfect for carrying the exact amount of water the duck dish needed in winter. A few weeks ago they had a turtle sandbox, which is by far one of the best things to have as a makeshift dust bath area for the 6 months of winter we get with frozen ground. I had already gotten a turtle sandbox off freecycle, but was thinking hard about a second one.

At our dump you aren't supposed to go through the household garbage.....but there is a scrounge spot, where you are supposed to put reusable things.

There are seprate spots for all metal scrap, appliances, fishing net and fishing rope, and construction stuff.

The construction stuff is magnificent.... All the leftovers from building. Actually, everything that is not toxic, and will not attact bears, goes into the contruction trash spot. Lots of lumber scraps, and roofing scraps, etc.

I think Alaskan's Christmas pictures will show his coop illuminated by tiny led lights, and the bantams dressed in little santa suits and a cute sign that reads "Happy Holidays to Humans and Fowl."

@perchie.girl truly? It is illegal to scrounge at most dumps?

That is crazy.

Yep and if you dont have a hard hat you cant go in Or you can buy one for fifteen bucks from them. Same one at the hardware store would cost you about six...

Thats Why I do my diving in back alleys and along affluent streets. Some people jsut set stuff on the curb with a free sign on it. I picked up six Railroad ties, three rolls of GOOD chicken wire and when He found out what I was doing with it he came back with about ten Tposts... Seems his wife didnt want a veggie garden in the back yard...

I have also gotten firewood this way.... people trim out the tree then stack the wood in their driveway with a free sign on it.... Gotto have some muscle to retrieve it though because Eucalyptus is pretty heavy....

Oh and kids toys.... Play structures swingsets and cozy coops.... Tables and chairs and barbeques.... too. Patio furniture that just needs to be restrung.... and a coat of paint... good stuff too.

Mom was always making me snag couches especially when I got my trunk... She was a whiz at reappoulstering from the Bargain bin.... then put about 25 bucks worth of time and materials then reselling the couch for a hundred bucks.

My very best snag was five single car garage doors. When i worked for ARCO I chatted up a local guy whos business was modernizing garage doors. He was in the middle of a condo complex job when I found out. He had five of them left to do. He even brought them to me. I still have them at the house. Single car garage doors are eight by eight feet... All heavy plywood with structure behind them. perfect for a wall or a roof.

Then In the industrial allyways you can get roebust pallets. I got about six for sheet metal... Those things were made of three to four 4 x 4s that were ten feet long and 1 x 6 cross pieces Kind of worthless but heck they burn just the same. Or if they didnt split down the middle when you tried to get them off they would be perfect for nailing up for wind breaks.,

SCG Miss Piggy is gorgeous - how does she look so clean. My friend with three silkies never bathes them or anything, it's like dirt dries and just falls off their feathers. I should be so lucky.
