The Old Folks Home

I heard portland has scales at the dump.... And charge you for dumping, and don't let you scrounge....

I think that is crazy......

Yep Charged by the pound.... They weigh you in and weigh you out and charge you for the difference here... But they have an inspector that walks the line to make sure you are dumping in the right spot you wear your hard hat and you are not picking through other peoples trash.

Oh and hes also looking for stuff that isnt supposed to go through the dump.... Used Oil Paint can aerosol cans and insectisides.

Any of which can get you a fine....

Last time I took a truck load through it cost me 50 for the trash and 15 for the hat. 50 is the minimum charge up to X amount of pounds.... dont know what that is but I determined that three times what I had would have been the same price....

Yep  and if you dont have a hard hat you cant go in  Or you can buy one for fifteen bucks from them.  Same one at the hardware store would cost you about six...

Thats Why I do my diving in back alleys and along affluent streets.  Some people jsut set stuff on the curb with a free sign on it.  I picked up six Railroad ties, three rolls of GOOD chicken wire and when He found out what I was doing with it he came back with about ten Tposts...  Seems his wife didnt want a veggie garden in the back yard...

I have also gotten firewood this way....  people trim out the tree then stack the wood in their driveway with a free sign on it....  Gotto have some muscle to retrieve it though because Eucalyptus is pretty heavy....

Oh and kids toys....  Play structures swingsets and cozy coops....    Tables and chairs and barbeques.... too.  Patio furniture that just needs to be restrung....  and a coat of paint... good stuff too.

Mom was always making me snag couches especially when I got my trunk...  She was a whiz at reappoulstering  from the Bargain bin.... then put about 25 bucks worth of time and materials then reselling the couch for a hundred bucks.

My very best snag was five single car garage doors.  When i worked for ARCO I chatted up a local guy whos business was modernizing garage doors.   He was in the middle of a condo complex job when I found out.  He had five of them left to do.  He even brought them to me.  I still have them at the house.  Single car garage doors are eight by eight feet...  All heavy plywood with structure behind them.  perfect for a wall or a roof.

Then In the industrial allyways you can get roebust pallets.  I got about six for sheet metal...  Those things were made of three to four 4 x 4s that were ten feet long and 1 x 6 cross pieces  Kind of worthless but heck they burn just the same.  Or if they didnt split down the middle when you tried to get them off they would be perfect for nailing up for wind breaks.,

Garage doors wowsers!

Yep the plywood alone is worth the hassle.... You have to have a Lumber rack on your truck to transport the double garage doors but they go down the road quite nicely that way. These guys that are pros at handling them can load a double on thier vehicle without bursting out something important... LOL Me... Id need at least three guys... But the singles I can load on my truck transport them to the yard and unload them to walk them over to my structure... in this case my last chicken coop.

Here most garage doors get loaded up onto pickup trucks as high as possible and driven to Mexico for building materials. But all you have to risk is asking.... Some may charge you a handling fee still worth it for even as much as fifty bucks....

@perchie.girl truly? It is illegal to scrounge at most dumps?

That is crazy.

Back in Tucson AZ, they banned people from going through the dumps because they were afraid the city/county/state would get sued if someone got hurt on the property. Easy fix, make 'em sign a waiver and no one under 18 allowed. Of course, government doesn't see common sense. We are in southern MO now and people are not allowed to go through the dumps but if someone is there and tossing out something you want, you can ask for it. They weigh you going in and coming out but it is so they know how much weight you left and they charge you for taking your trash. I keep trying to get my husband to burn the trash and rake up what is left to take to the dump but he won't. He takes boxes, bags and sometimes the trash sits for a few weeks and if it rains, stuff gets wet or holds water. He pays for them to take water. LOL

Its illegal to burn trash here.... flat out. I save anything not plastic for the fireplace.... Including paper towels. But no trash burning.... Even burning garden waste has to have a permitt. Its been a very very very long time since I have seen a burn pile ....

Matter of fact during the middle of winter up in around the San Fancisco area there was a complete ban on using fire places and outdoor barbeques. Zip Nada .... and some of those people were very very rural an depended upon their potbelly stoves for heat... Nope no exclusions....

the reason.... air quality.

We can burn trash here but I understand air quality. Some people burn tires and it makes the sky black and stinks for miles.

I don't really have any place to keep boxes and cardboard stuff and if I try to save it, my hubby will grab it and throw it away. He doesn't like for it to pile up. It's nice if he would start a fire for that kind of stuff, we could go out and sit and watch it but some how, his mind just doesn't work that way.
