The Old Folks Home

To anyone thinking about picking up sewing definitely hook up with SCG for advice. We worked on the leaf table runner this weekend like she posted and on the off hours we weren't working on that together, I worked on the pumpkin table runner that she did a while ago. Her advice and tips are awesome.

Before this weekend if I had tried making this without her help, it would have been a hot mess. We had so much fun crafting using Skype although I did learn we can't do it for hours because it eats up all my monthly data. We will have to cut back the Skype time to just when it is really needed.

No I didn't mess with their food they were just switched to FF so one change at a time. Once this feed is done ill up the protein they will probably just be ending their moult by the time the food is gone. Think I'll give them my leftover hemp seeds today... There's a nice vitamin and protein boost.

FF is probably all you will need. Along with free choice calcium.

Good to see u back dsqard. Been a while

Thanks Dude! I do check in and skim the hundreds of posts every few days but just been having so much fun with my other hobbies I haven't had much to say to everyone. Wisher I am sorry to hear that you have been having predator problems. I had some turkey losses over the last couple of months. I am down to a breeding pair so store bought turkey for us this year. :(
ETA thank you bunny for the compliment! :D

Let's just say my heart is way older than my mind.

I still feel like I'm 14 most days and then I look in the mirror and wonder what the heck happened.

Hennible, It was pretty much impossible to guess your age by eyeballs but, I thought you were a younger person - maybe high teens or early 20's.

Maybe that will be the next new thing ... antiaging drops for your eyeballs.

I had an incredibly interesting day today. Need to make some decisions about what I want to be when I grow up. And soon.

Beautiful maple leaves SCG.

Beautiful jelly vehve.

Just wanted to update on the catfish feed I have been feeding my birds, I had to stop using it. It was causing a circulation problem in the roosters as their combs were turning black and laying over.
I got and now just adding 1 cup of game bird feed to my starter grower that is 18% to boost just a hair to get it up to 20%.

When I stopped feeding the catfish feed the combs on the roosters started looking a lot better pretty quickly.

I am glad you got it sorted. I think you are still over doing it.

I read a lot of stuff here about "fancying" up your feeds. I am a big believer in probiotics but always get concerned about diet balance.

Higher protein than recommended is both a waste of money and not healthy

Many animals 'SWITCH" to eat is serum protein levels. If you give them too high a protein diet, they dont get enough calorie because they wont eat enough. They starve. The decrease in intake means less carbs, trace nutrients, vitamins, minerals as well because most feeds' additives are based on the labeled protein concentration and designed for the bird meant to eat it.

Millions and millions and millions of chickens do best on 15-16% protein.

Studies show no improvement in egg laying, egg size, chick hatchability and chick survivabilty when you go over 16% protein in layers and a significant drop in all metrics at 18%.

These are long term feed numbers, not protein bumps for molting.

Nitrogen metabolized by the nody is excreted as urea. That urea is the stink in chicken poop.

There is no benefit in boosting protein long term, only harm.

There is a great thesis from south africa on it

once you get to the graphed results, its very telling.
