How is processing a duck different than a chicken? I have never done a duck but I have one that may need sent to freezer camp and soon.

The biggest difference for me was the cuteness factor I find ducks cuter than chickens so that made dispatching it a bit more difficult... There's about twice as many feathers on a duck definitely add a bit of dish soap and scald at 160... The oil glands are bigger, a little harder to take off I actually sliced right through them but managed to clean it all up and it didn't wreck anything... And the gizzard was huge... Not that, that affected anything...

I know thats why they did it :p how are you today?

I'm good and I hope you are too! It isn't as cold today so our little warm up is underway. It's raining so the dampness makes it feel a little cooler. I am taking it easy today watching the last race of the year.... Go Joey Go!!

ya the cold coming in dried everything up, the overcast tends to warm things up here it's nice not having to deal with mud everywhere you turn but darn the cold is aching my bones. spent the last couple days digging and binding wire and shoveling dirt for the chickens free range area, I felt like moving into my pellet stove to live once got done

Hmm, yesterday I had no thought in my head about doing in a duck but this morning I found one attacking a Sebastopol goose. This duck, as far as I know is a hen and the only thing I could see is that maybe the goose wanted to sit on the duck eggs. This was a very stubborn duck. It wouldn't let go of the goose even with me chasing it. Of course the silly goose was running as much from me as from the duck attached to some of it's feathers.

Maybe the duck is broody...

With draft horses they castrate them when they are still nursing on ma....  because they are so much smaller there is less tissue trauma.   At that age they exercise themselves and momma walking about gets them moving.    I am told that lack of extra hormones allow the draft horses to get bigger taller....  but I think that may be an old wives tale.

True! Not an Old Wife's Tale. The sex hormones at puberty tell the long bones (legs) when to stop growing. Minimal sex hormones means a delayed closure signal to the long bones so they grow for longer. These taller individuals sometimes have an incongruity between the long bones and the other bones, muscles and attachments.

The difference in hormone ratios and total amounts also make it easier for the body to switch out muscle fibers for fat cells. Not a done deal but easier. This can lead to a bulkier looking individual. Less actual muscle but greater bulk.
