chicka, if you want a healthier diet, cut down on meat and add vegetables, and try to avoid carb heavy stuff, such as bread, pasta, rice and potatoes. Carrots and broccoli are your friends. Fish is great too. Steaming veggies is better than boiling them.
Thanks vehve. I keep hearing so many conflicts. Some say Atkins eat meat and vegies no bread or pasta or rice. I cannot eat fish or sea food I am allergic. I have never really ate much meat, I may eat meat 2-3 times a week. Even in home made soup I just eat the broth with no fat and vegies. But I think the steroids they are giving me for my RA is adding to the problem. I stay hungry but we don't even buy snacks or sweets as a rule!

Atkins is a bit too hard-core in my opinion, you do need carbs too. But most people eat too much of them. Consulting your doctor about the effects of your meds is probably a good idea too, and he or she might have some pointers on diet as well.

Dr. wants me to 5-6 times a day and small portions. But they have been giving me steroids for a year! you can't lose weight on steroids????
They put on DD2 on a new med and she gained 30 pounds in 1 1/2 months! Can you say WOW!

Yes and she said she could feel herself blowing up! She is so upset about it! :(
Poor girl!!!

Mine is a creeping thing. I manage to drop a few pounds by cutting a lot of calories but as soon as I go back to eating like a normal person, it creeps back up, sigh.
And yes, steroids will definitely make you gain weight! What a two edged sword! You have horrible joint pain from the RA, you take steroids to make life bearable but it makes you gain weight which puts pressure on your joints making them hurt...........................................
What a nasty merri-go-round to be stuck on

About 15 years ago I went on what I call a Lower Carb, Higher Protien diet. My revised version of an Adkins I guess. All I did was to cut my carbs to 1/3 to 1/2 of the daily recommended amount depending on the days menu. I added more protein by about a third more of the daily reccomended amount. I also added all the fresh vegetables and fruit I wanted. And I made sure I walked at least 1 mile every day. and 3 x's a week I walked 5 miles and 3x's a week I rode my bike 5 miles. The average time invested in any given day was about 1/2 hour to an hour. I felt great and lost 50 pounds. Alas though I have slaked off and put the weight back on but am working at losing it more slowly this time. I have lost 10 pounds over 4 months. Sounds slow but I noticed that it's easier to keep on track too. I've cut back on carbs just not as many, and added the protien just not as much, and exercise, again just not as much. A little more doable for right now. There are just too many health issues in the family background I want to avoid if possible.

So sorry about your DD2 chickadoodles! That must be awful for her. I hope you both can get off the steroids.

I am allergic to steroids. I would puff up but from anaphylactic shock. My throat started to close when I had to take it for allergic response. Ironic.
