Do they still sell incandescent bulbs in the States? They're very hard to find around here nowadays. Another example of badly implemented EU legislature. Sort of like the law that allows for cars to drive with only daytime lights in the front. People don't understand that they're driving around with dark tails before it's so dark that they need proper lights to see where they're going. Not smart legislature for a country where it's basically dark half of the year. It was better before 2011 when you had to have driving lights on all the time.

@Wisher1000 I took 6 roos my first year for processing. Ended up couldn't eat them. Sometime down the road I'd like to try some meat birds. I'll need a separate coop and run. Temporary though. Since that would be the intended use I think I'll be ok with it. But that's a bit in the future. I applaud your being able. that's awesome. I'm just getting to the point where I don't panic if one gets sick. So I'm getting there; just not yet.

Processing day is the toughest for me and I keep putting it off. I have 10 that have lived a lot longer than intended but hopefully the weather will cooperate and I can get some done today. I don't have a problem eating them when I consider their lives compared to those on a broiler farm. I'm very familiar with both.

Good shopping. That's a lot to get done.
I had chicks lost in the overnight mail a few years ago. I went to the PO in the morning, no chicks. I got through to the main guy at Express Mail, they put out a nation wide APB for these rare black penedesencas to no avail. The following morning I went back with a camera to photograph dead chicks. The peeping box was there and all were alive. They were 5 days old by then.
At least your eggs are in a suspended state.

There's still incandescent bulbs. All that was banned was manufacture and import of 40 and 60 watt incandescent. Even those are still around where they haven't exhausted inventory.
The "ban" was the result of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 signed by George Bush. The January 1, 2014 bulb ban was the final provision.

It really didn't ban incandescent per se. It just required that bulbs be 25% more efficient. In effect, you would only need 43 watts to generate the same amount of light as the 60 watt ILB. A 43 watt incandescent halogen does that.
The LEDs are coming down in price.
To generate heat from a light fixture, ceramic infrareds do a great job.


You don't have to travel far to see destruction around here. I was shocked to see the news when I woke up. There was a fire on the next major street to the west of me. A huge crowd closed interstate 44 overnight near the St. Louis University campus. That was near another killing in September in the Shaw neighborhood.

I like halogen bulbs, but they're a lot more expensive than the incandescent bulbs were. I live in the warmest part of the country, and even here we need to heat houses about 9 months of the year. Those three months that we don't, the days are 18-19 hours long, significantly reducing the need of added light. So the benefit of more efficient bulbs is pretty marginal, especially considering the fact that many of the more efficient bulbs are made with mercury, which needs to be disposed of separately. And some people switched out working incandescent bulbs for new, more efficient ones, not considering the fact that it adds to the toll our garbage takes on nature.

It's a shame that people are reacting to the verdict the way they are. Wrongs should be righted, but violence isn't the way to achieve that. I'm not familiar enough with the case to comment on the verdict, but surely rioting isn't helping the cause. I rewatched the movie Invictus yesterday, and I don't know how true Morgan Freeman's depiction of Nelson Mandela was, but you have to admire someone who after being imprisoned for 27 years comes out harboring no ill will towards his captors, and wants to unite a nation in separation.

Around here the halogens are about $1.50 compared to 0.25 for a comparable plain incandescent. That's not likely to change even if they get more popular since it just costs more to make halogen.
I think LED is the way to go for light.
There are places that take CFLs for recycling here. Even with the price, money is saved with CFLs within a year.
LEDs last 15-20 years and even more efficient than CFL so over time save a ton of money on both energy and replacement cost. They're wonderful for fixtures that are difficult to get to. I have a few of those like way up over stairways. LEDs are a godsend for those places.



It's 5AM and the local news teams are currently filming looting at a Home Depot shopping center just down the street from me. I'm watching it live. I just saw a row of burning cars.

I saw pictures from NYC. A lot of people have mobilized. It must be scary.

Yeah, LED:s are great when you only have need for the light. But if you're heating and lighting, it doesn't really make a difference if the heat comes from a radiator or a light bulb. The LED bulbs are finally giving a better light too, but I still prefer the light you get from a halogen lamp.

No excuse for looting and burning unrelated businesses. In some cases, it's the only place elderly people without cars have to go for groceries.

I didn't see the movie but I did closely follow the reconciliation trials. I found it incredible. He and others probably harbored ill will but they rose above it and moved on.

I was a bit young to follow the situation when it happened, but that movie is good. A combination of sports, history and politics.
