The Old Folks Home

Thanks SCG I will.
I don't know why she laid this in Jan. It might have been the storms last night.

I was hoping my duck would start again soon. The first year I had her she laid every single day. This last year was rough on her - she hatched ducklings (which were unfortunately eaten in the Great Rat Disaster of 2014), then went into a really hard molt. I've seen her and boy-duck at it a couple times since early November but no eggs, yet. I miss my duck eggs for cooking. I usually use those in the apple pancakes!

What kind of duck do you have? Sorry you lost the ducklings. :(

I am going to order a couple peking duck girls thru our co-op that way I don't have to pay delivery charge. I know my mom used our goose eggs in her baking and I can't wait to try some duck eggs in a cake.

I'm sitting gazing out the window - watching the light snow they predicted, stack up. It was supposed to be powdery - it's NOT! We'll be in the deep freeze this week with highs 4-9 below, blowing and drifting snow and all that pleasant-ness. High winds and low, low wind chills. I dislike the dilemma of face mask or goggles. If I wear the face mask the goggles totally fog up -

do you use the face mask for the snowmobile?

I've got 2 mixed breed ducks, but they look like white pekins. Girl duck has some black spots on her bill, and she's hatched out some crazy looking chicks, so I know she's not purebred. She lays like a champ, though. We haven't had good luck with ducklings here. I started with 6 duck eggs and ended up with 4 boys and 1 girl. Two got eaten by a fox, and another I ate (it was delicious). Later I hatched some ducklings but couldn't get them assimilated into the group, which I've read is odd for ducks since they're supposed to be less peckish. Unfortunately we had to put one of the boys down because he got his leg broken in "play" with boyduck. I've tried ducklings on multiple occasions and ended up with heartbreak. The funniest one I had was my banty hen being a duck momma. Unfortunately the duck thought it was a chicken and preferred to live in the chicken coop with momma. When I tried to separate them (because duckling was making an unholy mess in the chicken coop) and get it in with the rest of the ducks it made so much noise it attracted a fox. So this year I thought that it was great momma duck was broody... figured I wouldn't have problems with the group. Cue the rats.

@drumstick diva They do make snowmobile masks with hand operated windshield wipers.
Edited to add I can't find a pic anywhere but a buddy has a pair. I did find a glove wiper for cleaning goggles and masks. But I guess that won't help fogging up on the inside.

Quote: Your ducks sound like fun. Know a lot of people eat duck. I have never tried it and DH does not sound like he wants to. Our male duck is in with our chickens and is trying to make any of the hens his girlfriend. lol but he keeps pulling their feathers out keeping them bald. The chickens don't mind him except for maybe him swimming in their water. Is it harder to hatch duck eggs than chicken or turkey eggs? I thought about getting some eggs.
