The Old Folks Home

My favorite MS operating system was Windows 2000 Professional. It was secure, stable, customizable, bulletproof, and a functional upgrade from NT. I think I may have cried when they quit support for it - which came at the same time as an Internet Explorer upgrade that was incompatible.
I think I just threw that laptop away.

I did fight the move from 3.1 to 95 but the multi-tasking of the latter was pretty cool.

I didn't even like leaving DOS.

I prefer simple. I guess I belong in an OFH.

For those with freeze up issues. Definitely try a cleanup, defrag and disc repair even if it says it isn't fragmented.

For slow running machines, run spybot first, then ad aware.
If you've been hijacked = hijackthis.

From what I understand the reason for the # jump is that 10 is not a "fix" but a complete rebuild. They've basically raised the white flag on 8 and started over, again. My understanding is they will be dropping support for all prior versions (already done it on Vista) which is the reason, the grapevine has it, for planning on offering a free upgrade in the fall to all users now running Vista and newer tho I seriously doubt it will even run on a Vista machine. I do know they have put back some of the more user friendly features they took out of 8 (they listened to the screaming hordes) and I have already had the opportunity to play a little bit with the 3-D hologram ability. A little freaky but really cool to a granny geek like myself. (oops. forgot to mention that requires a Star Trek style headset of course)

Well this is good news. I only hope it will still allow software to run that works on 7.

good point Deb. Not famous for their compatibility in the past and they are being pretty quiet about that so far. Think I will go snooping around about that. Let you know if I find out anything.

I am running older versions of SolidWorks and Autocad. I just had this computer built last year so I suspect It will be on its last legs by about the time I am happy with 10. I seem to be able to keep them going for about seven years. I havent opted to reload the cad software because I was hoping to get more recent copies. I am giving up on that and will install them again in the next few months.

So it would be helpful to know which versions of SolidWorks and Autocad it will work with.

Deb, check out the free version of AutoCad, I think they offer the newest one to people who have worked in a related field earlier.

Where.... do you have the link?

So far the cheapest I have found was a subscription service.... and it runs off the cloud.... it is way out of my price range.

This is the link to the video about one of the crazy cool features of 10.

Isn't it great. Wish I was one of them..I would know better how to fix a problem on mine when it pops up. Have to say though, I did figure out something...alll on my own the other day. Got a new screen, didn't like some things that were set different on it, man, had to go into my ... control panel too..(patting myself on the back.)

I have dual monitors at work. Brought my laptop home and had BF set up a second monitor here, too.

Then I brought my laptop back to work and the thing was reversed with the "main" screen being on the far right instead of right in front of me. So I fixed it.

I swapped the two monitors physically to the correct position. I was so proud of myself.
