Wow! She loves this! Taking her tonight to her favorite place to eat...Golden Corral. She loves it there because she can see the food before she picks it out. That and the chocolate fountain.

Ok, what do you guys think. One of the 7 week old roos has managed to get stuck out in the run. He's pretty much feathered, so I think he should withstand the cold pretty well. I'd like for him to gather up the courage to get back into the coop on his own. The bigger birds seem to be ignoring him, but he's afraid to go past them. It's about 0C/32F outside.

Should I intervene and get him back in the coop, or should I just wait and see if he goes on his own?

I do an accelerated program here for heat (or lack thereof). My birds are outdoor weather ready (in Maine) around 7 to 8 weeks. I used to be really careful about the whole "95 degrees the first week then reduce 5 degrees a week" until I had natural broodies hatch in the dead of winter and I saw how well the chicks did in that kind of environment. Now they get "real heat" for the first week, and then get reduced down significantly after that on a week by week basis.

Diva, I think you'll be pretty safe if you keep your vaccines up to date. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but I think tetanus should be good for at least ten years, might even be longer if you've gotten the shot a couple of times.

I'll chime in here! They're technically due every 5 years but with the recent pertussis (whooping cough) outbreaks we've had, an adult that's around young children (and that's likely everyone) should go regardless of the last dose of Td (tetanus diptheria) and get a Tdap (tetanus, diptheria and acellular pertussis) as one dose as a booster and then get back on the every 5 year schedule of Td.

We have mild winter and early Spring but Summer is brutal.

I agree with you Guy, the issues with SCG's chicks this hatch are likely the breeder stock. It think there was isbar involved and that is one breed that GFF really messed up on. The only way to really fix the problem is to get some new blood involved--maybe find a line that was imported separately from GFF. Another option to try would be to partner with other isbar breeders and work to correct faults. Every three years swap eggs with the team.

The teams would need to cull hard and never help a chick. Doing this should get improvement in a lot less time. Also, isbars were never finished as an auto sexing breed. That should be worked on and there are notes on how to do it.

Thank you for the vindication, Ron. They were from GFF stock and as awful as I feel about it, I did everything that I could. I did notice that the last isbar is favoring one leg sometimes, but nothing definitive, yet.

Okay, Old Folks, I need some advice. I need some strategies for increasing my energy level, quickly. I have gotten to where even the chicken chores (normally FUN to me) are not getting done, because I feel exhausted all the time. I don't do enough to feel so tired. I have already made some changes to my diet and will be losing a bit of weight, but I want some energy...NOW! Caffeine is not enough and is spent quickly. Energy supplements (5Hour Energy) work if I take them early in the day, but will not last until I get off work in the afternoons. If I take them later, I can't sleep that night. I'm thinking I need some B12. Have any of you done that? Any other suggestions?

Go to your doctor and get a physical and make sure there's nothing organic going on - like anemia - and then worry about a healthy lifestyle (more water, better sleep, increased exercise, better snacking). Energy supplements aren't the answer, they'll tank your energy later in the day when you crash. Don't supplement unless you need to (proven by blood tests your doctor will order).

PMing you.

Wisher -

I found that switching to carrot juice in the P.M. instead of caffeination (coffee, tea or soft drinks) at noon gave me an afternoon bounce that the aforementioned drinks didn't.

How's your vision? I've find that when my eyes are tired, so am I.

Fibromelanistic black meat chicken is supposed to reverse the clock, make you younger. Prevents diseases also, read up on it. Can't wait to start my flock of black meat chickens.
