The Old Folks Home

Kathy, sorry for your loss. Seven years is quite a feat for a chicken.

Oz, my insulated waterer build got me thinking... rubbermaid totes and PU foam would make a nice box for a bator too.
many people spend good money on a big coleman cooler.

i use 3/4 plywood and 1/2 inch foil backed foam insulation.

the rubbermaid totes would work well if insulated

Oz, yeah, it's pretty quick to work with the PU foam. If you have two boxes, one slightly smaller than the second you can easily fill the space between them an it will insulate quite well. The lid is something that you need to figure out how to make nicely, but that shouldn't be an issue either. Even a clear lid might work nicely, since it would be insulated from all other directions, and that would allow you to see inside it. Plus you could make the air holes in the lid more easily.

If anyone tries this, don't start by filling it with PU foam, it will swell a lot so do the bottom first and then start working on the sides 15-20 minutes later, filling it a bit more at a time and letting it swell in between.

how many cubic inches are there in a can of foam do you think?

Of course, the thickness of the layer will play a significant role, for an incubator used indoors you probably don't need even an inch of the stuff. My bucket had about 2-3 cm in between the shells. If you want to add to the insulation, I recommend gluing a layer of space blanket outside of the inner shell. That will reflect a lot of heat.

Also, forget a can of shaving cream in someone's car. PU foam is what you want to use if you're really angry at someone.

*DISCLAIMER* DON'T EMPTY A CAN OF PU FOAM IN SOMEONE'S CAR!!!

X2, and then some. They did this on "Mythbusters" once . . . . .
