That's a great idea and I think I have just the right table that they could go under to eat. I sure am glad I got on this thread. Lot's of good advice from everyone.

My father always kept his broody hen isolated when she was setting in what looked like a giant rabbit cage, or chicken tractor on legs. But put her back in general population after the hatch. She was a black japanese bantam about the size of a crow, the rest were RIRs. They didn't mess with her, she was ferocious when she had chicks. The big bad mean RIR rooster would help her take care of the chicks, he was a good dad. She hatched out a bunch of wild turkey eggs once, watching them follow her around was funny when they were twice the size of her Lol!

I prefer them separate just because they don't really miss the flock and I like raising chicks separately.

Cc, it really has been exceptionally warm. Mostly barely freezing, and we seem to almost be in thermal spring already, meaning that the daily mean temp is above zero for good.

Sswanee, do you have a dog crate you could put in the coop?

We built this out of scraps for a coop broody box:







I think it's about 2.5 x 1.5 feet. It protects the broody and her babies from the rest of the pack. I have had quite a few chicks get mauled to death by the rest of the flock. I had a particularly vicious hen a few years ago that despised chicks. This box works great and it can be used in or out of the coop.


Brahmas foot is looking a little better but it's still pretty swollen. Usually I'm able to wrap the foot so the triple antibiotic ointment stays on there and the healing usually starts quickly. She is very adept at getting her bandage off. But she does enjoy those soaks.



I've got another one in the coop that's limping, and her toes on the left foot are pretty swollen but there's absolutely no bumble or other mark on the foot to explain it.

We've had an unwelcome visitor the past two days. Raccoon tracks everywhere. all around the coop and run left a calling card on the top of the run roof.

tried to get under the big door to the run but gave up when it got to the hardware cloth!

I set out a live trap but no luck so far.

the trap is staying until the raccoon is gone.

I love your broody box, it actually looks square and well built!! (unlike everything that I build)
