The Old Folks Home

Will it keep your native predators out?(or is the biggest predator neighbors?)

I believe all the native predators Oz has are feral cats... He had green plastic mesh before and it worked... but as in all things plastic the sun disintegrates it.

Yes it will keep out predators.

Our biggest threats are cats and rats.

The rats cant climb the GI sheet around the lower portion. We have had issues with tunneling rats but harware cloth underground is not an option as ir will just disolve. We will have to take the concrete foundation down to about 18" or just use the coop for adults.

Rats are not an issue once birds are around 12 weeks.

Cats are devastating. The roofs of the runs are poly rope fish net. Cats wont venture out onto it as it is not solid enough.

We have lost one clutch of scovie eggs to a neighbor tearing a few palings off the fence. That was a one time occurance about 8 weeks ago.

Our local Bisaya free rangers will take off over the fence. The odds of return are marginal.

Our biggest issue is microbial predators. Vaccinations are a must. Newcastle, Coryza, Fowl Cholera and Pox are all endemic. Worms are always an issue if we are not vigilent with de-worming.

No one has mentioned Gerald's Game ..........

That one was SICK! I felt bad for that poor guy.....
The Stand was my favorite, read it when I was 17, until three, four in the morning finished it in two days (school was rough). Anyone feel that his 'short story' The Long Walk is awfully similar to Hunger Games?
Seriously you guys should check out Louis L'Amour's only sci-fi book Haunted Mesa, reminded me somewhat of Kings Darktower series.

Of course Haunted Mesa is based on real life sorta kinda if you believe the old stories told by the Navajo Indians about the ancient pueblo dwelers the Anasazi Indians, ancient history and stories folklore passed down for a thousand years. L'Amour puts one heck of a spin on it.

Duma Key scared me so bad I actually stopped reading it at the end. I didn't want to know what was on that boat.

And BF makes fun of me - my first was The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and he should know that I DO NOT DO WELL WITH STALKING THINGS. THE ENTIRE BOOK WAS STALKING. I hated him for months after he loaned me that book.

I have also read 'Salems Lot and the one about the dome thing... both of which were not scary but were pretty good/easy reads. As long as he stays away from the creepy stalky jumpy things I'm good.

Maddy and her friend Gracie are having a sleepover. They are helping to make spaghetti and garlic bread right now...but we also made some strawberry banana smoothies!

As a Science fiction fan I loved loved loved Dune. I red it first when I was in high school as a freshman. Then I read it once a year after that. Odd how your perspective changes as you get a bit older. I read it once a year till I was about twenty.

Then I read it once every two till I was about twenty six... Again each time I got different stuff out of it.

The Theater movie I liked was the one with Kyle Mclaughlin, Patric Stewart, Sting and Linda hunt as Shadowt Mapes.

The mini series on the Science Fiction Channel was far better, more in tune with the book. The book is a difficult movie to make because much of it is internal dialogue.

Probably time to read it again.

Frank Herbert is one of my favorite authors even though I have only read two others besides the Dune Triliogy.

He wrote
Lazarus effect
Helstroms Hive

I havent read
Destination void series

Harry Harrison is another of my favorites:
Captive Universe is one of my favorites even though its a Novella.... Around 50,000 wortds or around a 150-200 pages.

He also wrote the Stainless Steel Rat series... Individual books about a single character... What a hoot.
