I wonder how they incubated eggs in 1890

DK I am so sorry about your eggs. I would send both of those bators back to be fixed or replaced. They cost a good dime and I would want my dime back!

Welcome to the new people. I am chickadoodles and I pop in and out to say hi or reply to some random posts. I love BYC.
I am giving up my chickens for more space for my turkey. We are still keeping the layer hens.

Lol. I would imagine a wood burning incubator would be tricky

Once you get the hang of it, it's easy. The first year with my woodstove I alternated between freezing to death and chimney fire. Now I am an expert. Would have killed a lot of babies in the beginning.

In the chicken coop today there's a lot of blue feather clumps. The blue turkey hen is looking puffed up and upset-like. I think she might have gotten some lovin' today. It's hard to tell with two toms whether it's "spring" or not - they spent the entire winter displaying and trying to push each other over. Although I saw girl-duck get some lovin' last October and periodically since, and still no eggs.

It sounds like they will be cranking up for you to hatch some eggs.

We have another cold front hitting us Fri. night 34* and Sat. night 39*. I wonder if I should put my newly started berry and cherry plants in the shed?

I had one duck hatch early and now it is trying to cuddle with a poult that hatched yesterday and the poult keeps running and hollering. Poor ducky.

Thanks for all the opinions on GMO. I appreciate the replies and glad it did not bring out fanatics

By the sheer numbers of meals eaten that contain GMO products, I think safety is proven but the loss of biodiversity in seed is a major concern. Its not dissimilar to the history of chickens in the 20th century. It will be up to the small farmer and backyard grower to keep the genetics alive.

As far as labelling goes, I dont see the need to label as GMO foods but those that are non-GMO should use it in their marketing.

I find it interesting that BT corn is genetically modified to contain the number one organic pesticide used today.

I also think that while Monsanto has a lot to answer for regarding business practices, the appeal of having less herbicides in our food is appealing.
