Lol Alaskan, that happened to us when we drove to Florida a few years ago. We got a prepaid credit card from the bank and some cash, left our debit and real credit cards home. Got to Disney, ate at a restaurant, paid with the prepaid credit card and they came back and said it was denied!! Embarrassing! Lucky we had some cash, pretty scary thousands of miles from home and no money! Well some cash but not enough! Called the # on the back of the card and they said it was a automatic computer thing, purchases made through several states it thought it was stolen! Good to know they will do that but geez they didn't have to scare and embarrass us Lol!

Today I got a call from someone over seas stating they were the IRS and they wanted money!

and it really was compromised? It isn't just that the credit card people panicked because he used it in a totally new city?

That happens to my parents quite often.

Nope. It was the real deal. He left Sunday and sent the bank a secure email stating that he would be traveling and in what states. He used the card 3 times today and then when he went to gas up it was denied and he knew he had not overspent. I called and there were 2 - $2 charges in states that he had not traveled to and they were made today at the same time.

We had ours stolen in 2010 and it coincided with a trip out west. We found out it was taken when the Russian mafia hacked Schlozkys system and stole a bunch of numbers. We had eaten there two days before we left on our trip.

It amazes me that the thieves can turn out a fake card faster than we can get a new one from the bank.

At least you are wise enough not to bite. I am amazed at how many people give their personal info out freely.

Oh man, my DH got a similar call..well, supposedly from the IRS. So silly, they said, this is your last notice, you are being sued. What? ... Didn't know they sued. Call this number back for more info. Oh...ok...

We were getting the IRS one last year to settle back taxes owed, wife hung up on them every time, she knew we didn't owe anything.
Just this week we got a new one not from the 'IRS' asking for our bank account # so they could verify our account...? Huh, nope click...
Whenever we start getting these usually we get a notice in our local newspaper warning of it. I feel sorry for those who fall prey.
