The Old Folks Home

I hear you, Microchick! I'm semi-retired and find enjoyment in the job days because I have a chance to actually sit down. My projects are exhausting, but then so are most start-ups to things. Hopefully once the garden and studio get established things will fall into a routine, but right now both are labor intensive....that and there's still a lot of stuff to sort and unpack from the move. (moved from suburbs to farm, so this Spring is especially busy with orchard maintenance and rehabbing the agriculture, house and grounds)

Chickadoodles..... OUCH! Start drinking that milk and mending that fissure.

deb.... Isn't sleep a great reset button?

Vehve.... I missed the post. Baby bunnies yet? How many?

@chickadoodles you cracked a hip? Oh no. Has to be painful. So sorry. Follow docs directions..hear?

I know you will..right?

@microchick The chicks are about as mutts as can be.

Speckled Sussex X (Black Copper Marans X (Finnish Alho Landrace X (Araucana X Silkie))) would sort of be the recipe. If my memory doesn't fail me. Might be some orpington or something in there too, I don't know. These are our first chicks hatched from own eggs, these all came from lovely dark olive colored eggs. The mommy for the mix came from a pale blue egg. I'm expecting some kind of green and brown eggs out of these guys, the sussex will probably mix down the brown a bit that they're getting from the mommy side. I think the black with brown lacing that two of the chicks seem to be developing looks really cool, it will be interesting to see how these turn out.

Here's a bad pic of the parent stock, daddy in the middle (SS) and mommy by the pop door behind him (OE). One the left we have the adopted same sex parents for the chicks, the girls hatched them together.

Peep, baby bunnies should be about 15 days old now, we still haven't seen them. We might buy a trail cam tomorrow to try and catch a glimpse, it could come in handy otherwise too.

By the way, if anyone has experience with the Scout Guard SG570-10mHD, feel free to share.

Bama, yeah, it's a 10M camera that should have about a 40 foot range with the infrared flash. It also captures 720px video. I was looking at one with a sim card at first, but a decent one would already cost quite a lot more.

Look at that huge comb on that boy!

I like mutts. I'm hoping one of our Buffs will go broody and will set some Orp/Wellie crosses for me. We were hoping that we had 4 Welsummer hens but it turns out that it looks like we have two roos and two hens. 2 had salmon colored breast feathers come in and the other two had black breast feathers along with little combs. We should be getting some beautiful dark brown speckled eggs from those two Wellie hens I hope and if the Buff roos do their jobs and let the Wellie roos come around the Buff hens, we will get some very pretty chicks out of them.

Peep_show I know what you are talking about. When we started consolidating two homes into one my husband and I looked around and decided we needed more closet space. So we stopped and built a closet. Then we stopped and built a new utility room and a safe room then we stopped....I think you get the picture. At one point we looked at one another and said "where did we get all this junk and why are we keeping it?" We managed to sort out a bunch to go to the local resale stores like Salvation Army and The Crossing but there is just so much STUFF to have to deal with.

Then we too have an orchard and a blackberry arbor that needs tended, a garden and general farm type upkeep to do on the place.

It makes us wish we had retired about 5 years earlier than we did but we decided to retire early so we could enjoy some of our 'good' senior years. We have a friend with a degenerative neuromuscular disease who retired several years ago. He had one year before his condition caused him to decline to the point that he can no longer do the things he was enjoying 5 years ago. We decided we were not going to go that route and in all honesty I'm glad we didn't wait. I cannot imagine being 5 years older than I am and doing what we are having to do now.
