The Old Folks Home

Everyone who'll listen knows that I want cremated then tossed on the garden so I'll at least be useful once in this lifetime. Also it's my way of saying "bite me" after I'm gone.

LOL... Yep fruit... we have enough frost to grow apples, peaches, pears, cherrries, even some cold hearty varieties of Citrus like Mandarine oranges, Kumquats, Lemons, and Limes. When i moved here there was a Fig tree, and an apricot tree... The goats girdled them...

Some varieties of berries will grow here too... Raspberries and Blueberries... Then there is the ever present strawberry. and yes Cactus does have fruit... Cactus apples taste like tart grapes... and make excellent jelly. the seeds are like bird shot... so strain them out or break a tooth.

As long as it likes heat of the day you can grow anything in the desert here... YOu only need water. and maybe some good compost to keep it around.

Oh there are desert edibles... about 500 of them but the ones I have on my property are below:

Mesquite seed pods ground whole pod and all make excellent flour for any baking needs
Yucca fruit picked green can be cooked like squash.
Yucca root is similar to potato.
Mexican Elderberry is native here and I have several http://www.arizonensis.org/sonoran/fieldguide/plantae/sambucus_mexicana.html
Though the birds get it before I see berries.

I am a Tossed in the garden type.... Funerals are for the living... So what ever service they need is fine for me... Dad had two services one here in town and one up where all the relatives are. Hes buried in Hermosa Cemetary with some of Wayatt Erps family... I love the place I very pretty and well kept lots of history.... Not for me..

I want to be part of my land that I love so much.

Water is the issue.
At least you have a horse for compost.

that I have.... LOL... shes taken to standing on her former bandini mountain.... its now flat but its up against the fence... she stands there swatting flies and the holes shes made show black black soil underneath.

for those who are unfamiliar with horse maneur... Its only good for mulch at first.... but if left alone for a couple of years its awesome Her pile is a good ten years old...

I have an Aunt who, several years ago, was badly burned in a house fire. She survived and now lives very comfortably, but at the time she needed some skin grafts to the arms and backs of her hands. Normally they take skin from the legs for those grafts but her legs were pretty scarred as well. So, they took skin from one of her butt cheeks for the backs of her hands. Now she revels in offering her hand to be kissed when you meet her. Guess what is going through her mind as she offers you her hand?

CC, cool energy projects. Over by my school they've got a geothermal heat project going too. They're drilling two 3 inch holes about 4 miles into the ground. Once the thing is ready, it will produce heat at 40 megawatts, enough to heat 15000 houses. Water is pumped into one hole and back up through the other, it comes out at a temp of about 120C or 250F. Quite an interesting project.

Horse manure is the best for a compost pile.
