The Old Folks Home

@superchemicalgirl I showed the wife the pics you posted of that machine. Now she wants one. Looks just like the one she said she always saw her grandma using. The family lost that one when her oldest brother and his longtime girlfriend parted company. He says she has it, she swears she never did. Guess the wife's family lost a family heirloom.
Wife's been checking around for one, any suggestions on making sure she doesn't buy one that we'll have to dump tons of $ into?

I'm certainly no expert since I can't figure out what's wrong with my 1905 machine... but here goes.
I checked treadleon.net for instructions on how to clean/oil and how to buy. http://treadleon.net./sewingmachineshop/treadles/selectingtreadle.html

Basically:
1. Make sure it has the shuttle (oops) and at least 2 bobbins (I figured the replacement would fit. Silly SCG)
2. Personally if I were you I wouldn't buy the singer "red eye" model 66. The feet are not interchangeable with other sewing feet if they clamp in the back. If they clamp on the side, you're fine to buy.
3. Buy one with a nice cabinet. You can always switch out machines as long as they're the right kind.
4. Buy a singer. Lots of parts out there
5. Before you buy get the model number off the machine and check it here http://ismacs.net/singer_sewing_mac...er-sewing-machine-serial-number-database.html and don't buy anything older than 1890

Not sure where you live but this looks like a good deal

Awesome job ferreting out the innards of your sewing machine....

Mom did somewhat the same as you with a Piano... someone gave her... it came as a bunch of boxes of pieces parts. But she spent hours figuring out how to put it all together then replacing parts that mice had eaten. making each leather part by hand with a pair of scissors... Felts too... It was a bird cage upright.... All the hammers and internal levers were built together so you could lift them all out and work on them. She got it finished and dads business went bankrupt. We lost it in the bankrupcy.

Note to anyone out there do not go into partnership in a business with out protecting your personal stuff through some sort of corporation...

We lost the house and one of the cars and anything we couldnt afford to get on a single moving van.... sigh.

Anyway we moved to Vegas and one of Dads friends asked him if he wanted a Piano... He said he had just got it and was going to paint it white to match his decore but decided to get a new one. Dad gave it to mom as a surprise.

Truck pulled up and piano delivered....

1890 Pianoforte.... Cherry wood with the original gold leaf embellishments.....

This is off the internet not ours.

then the next couple of days dad shows up with a grocery bag.... he said the fellow said that these belong to it... Mom pulled out Brass candelobras and their mounts for the front of the piano... original parts.

Mom was stunned and in love.... "... and he was going to paint it white" she said

Turns out it had a cracked sounding board. the hazards of living in a very low humidity climate... It would only hold a tune for about a week... she didnt care.

I don't know, dude. The word we were given was that they are basically renting space to the ad agency, and they don't have control over what ads get put in it. We were told that if we found a particular ad offensive, we should take a screen shot of it if possible, and report it to the mods. They can then tell the ad agency "don't show this one on our site," and it will get removed from the "playlist." It may be that nobody has fussed about that one yet.:idunno

It would take one heckuva ad to offend me lol.

I'm so sorry you guys went through that but what a lovely piano that came out of the sadness.

I've got a bunch of chores today but it's going to be 86 (and we don't have a/c) today so I'm not sure how much I'll get done before it gets too hot to live. Once that happens, I'm going to sit down and get intimate with the 1892 and clean her up. BF is going to look at the 1905 and see if he can't adjust the shuttle race to fit the bobbin I do have.

Tomorrow is going to be even hotter... uggghhhh

Color me tired! Up at 4:45 to leave at 5:15 and drive 2.5 hours yesterday to attend a field trial. Ran 3 dogs in 3 classes for a total of six entries. Hot, humid, hilly - enough to tucker an old man out - heck, enough to tucker a young man out. Dogs did well: Speak Easy two thirds, War Eagle a first and fifth, Dunkin D a second and fifth. Speak Easy had to run a total of 7 times for those two thirds. Allowed the dogs to cool down and started for home at 5:30 getting here at 8. Up this morning and training dogs by 7 - is there something wrong with me?
