The Old Folks Home

Besides not getting my stencil lined up for the front door and top window, I don't think I did too badly considering I can barely draw a stick figure. I believe we finish it next week, filling in details, putting borders on it and quilting it. I did almost have a major accident (perhaps I might admit to more than one close call) with my X-acto knife, but crisis was averted at the last minute and all digits remain intact.
This is not exactly my style, it's a little too "country" for me (and I have no idea what the brown thing is on the right), but I'm overall pleased with it.

Very nice for a first time.. I take it this is air brusH?

I did a little air brush with one of those aerosol cans... Loved it... but hated the whole cleaning thing.

Scg and Diva I don't know why but when I have to cut stuff up to cook somehow the knife jumps up and gets me every dang time!
Diva don't get me going on those old Bic razors! I switched to schick and they were a little better.

Ya know it was not to long ago one of my kids took me to pick up a few things at the market and I needed some razors...
Well after I looked at the prices off every pack at walmart, I told my daughter I have never spent 10.00 on razors and I did not intend to start now! A lady walked by and heard me and I guess they were all wondering what planet I shopped on...
The family dollar always had the best razors for 3.00 for 10. I bought them twice a month and all my girls grew up using them and I still do.

Dull knives cause more cuts, usually because they have a tendency to jump when they catch while cutting. If you still have a store with a meat department, take your knives in and have them sharpened. Most of them will not charge for sharpening.

Also, watch some knife safety and cutting technique videos on You Tube. I use very sharp knives on a daily basis and rarely cut my self. I was cooking at a men's prayer breakfast and the Head Cook did not use the correct technique and cut the top off of the back of a finger. He had to go to emergency for it. He was using one of my French knives and it was very sharp.

Poor Guy did not know how to hold things while cutting...

Quote: Thank you Ron. I did not know the meat dept. would do that! That's great. I will take a few when we go back.

And you are totally right about not knowing the correct way to cut things. As kids we were never allowed in the kitchen so none of us knew how to cook when we left home. lol At least I had an older sister to call and ask for help.

I feel for the guy that had to go to the ER. I have cut myself my ways than I care to think about.
I will look for some videos.

We just got our chicken coop put semi back together after cleaning it, took all day bleaching and scrubbing everything. Well it was dark so I had to help a few get settled in from some changes we made and one hen tore my arm up from my wrist to my elbo! I have never had a chicken do that much to me while trying to help them. DH said I should have left her outside in the run.

Negative. You trace the picture onto wax paper and then "cut" parts of it out. You then iron it onto your fabric, and peel up pieces and use oil based paint and brushes.

I described it as an advent calendar from hell.

Ron, you are right about dull knives. I've got a couple full sets of Henckles, and they and shave frog's hair. Dull knives don't glide through whatever they're cutting with even pressure. I had been using the bread knife for years to cut bagels, then read an article about how many people end up in the ER with what they termed as bagel cuts. I figured I had pushed my luck, and got a plastic thing to put the bagels in to cut them.

Yep sharp knives are the safest. KNowing how to stabilize the food and keep your fingers out of the way is essential for cutting.

I was not trained by any one except TV with regard to knife safety. But A tool is a tool and my dad always said let the tool do the job if you are working at it you are either using it wrong or the tool is dull.

But there are some things that require extra care when cutting even with a sharp blade. Root vegitables come to mind. Standing at the right height to make your cuts using the least amount of pressuere is ideal. I am sitting in a chair when i work at the cutting board... most times its good.. But cutting Rutabegas is Difficult at best... I cant afford good quality knifes so I use the hand sharpener alot.

One of those kind that has two sides one for sharpening and one for Honing. The sharpening side knocks off the microsocpic bits that are laying over due to work... the HOning side is ceramic and usually white. That side is the part that makes the knife sharp.

Here in Town there are people who sharpen knifes for a living Sign in one window was five dollars a knife. Used to be Buck knifes was right here in Santee and you could take your knifes there for sharpening.

I have three knifes that are my favorites and one knife for special duty.

Long handle short blade paring knife
Long handle long blade for larger cutting jobs
Chefs knife for slicing dicing and 90 percent of my cutting work.

I also have a boning knife LONG flexible blade and VERY sharp. It resides in its own plastic box and only comes out for projects.

Finally I would love to have:

A Cleaver
A Small Chefs knife
A Bread knife
A Slicing knife
A knife dedicated to processing chickens the kind that has disposable blades so its ALWAYS sharp.

I would also love to take a class on sharpening using a Wet Stone as well as obtaining a good sharpening machine for up at the house.

I could never use one of those sharpening steels... Because I am AFRAID of knifes... figure that one out.

If I were to be doing alot of butchering I would also need a Butchers glove. Because I have cut myself countless times making stupid choices while using a kinife.... stabs, slices, and attempts to remove the tip of my finger... that one required stitches. All while using a knife that was dull, or on an unstable work surface.

My most recent injury was just a few weeks ago. A shallow stab in the palm of my hand all the while I was thinking I was going to stab myself... Yep it happened. Cutting up Rutabegas. For what its worth I should have foregone my ego and popped them into the microwave for a softening pre cut cook... it only takes a little bit..

And If you are cutting onions to escape the noxious fumes you MUST use a very sharp knife.

My dream kitchen has a cutting station Just for keeping the knifes separate and maintined... And a good cutting board that can be Stripped off and thrown into the dishwasher for sterilization. Here in this house when I moved in all sharp knives were thrown into a drawer with all the other utensils... I freaked out and broke the rules to buy a knife block...
