Totally in agreement about mandatory boot camp, if only to put some polish on kids. Teach them manners, how to clean, fold laundry, attention to detail. I'm now married to ex-Navy and feel that the "training" is the best use of my tax dollars ever!

@vehveTrue, there are some 'bad eggs' even among the volunteers.
But overall I think it would improve our youths physically, mentally, and emotionally. Discipline. Much of this American youth is severely lacking.
For me the biggest benefits were ability to take orders (discipline) and the self confidence of knowing your mentally and definitely physically capable of way more than you think. I didn't keep the order and neatness though, evidence in the mess my garage is always in, can't get a car in, or hang a deer...Uggh....need to get organized.....Lol....

Cynthia you have a very patriotic family. And very handsome service men to be very proud of.

Happy Veterans day to them all!

My family is also full of Military Veterans the only one I have a pic of is my son.

My family isn't particularly militaristic. I'm one of the few in my family that has served.
All my mom's brothers saw combat in WWII. They all survived.
There was a shortage of farm workers in the early 40s. My dad and his brothers had farming deferments. By 1943, it was determined one of the brothers would have to go but that never came to pass. Of the 4, one had committed suicide a few years earlier, one was simple, so there were only 2 who were really fit for service.
My brother was past draft age by the Vietnam draft.
My son hasn't volunteered.
I was drafted in '72 and served 2 years.
Most recently, I have one nephew that was in the Air Force and saw combat in Grenada. He was driving a supply truck dodging mortar rounds. That only lasted a few days. Nearly 8,000 US soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines had participated in Operation Urgent Fury along with 353 personnel of the Caribbean Peace Forces. The U.S. forces had 19 killed and 116 wounded; at least 24 civilians were killed, 18 of whom were killed in the accidental bombing of a Grenadian mental hospital

So between all grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, children and grandchildren. I guess 7% is pretty close in our family.

@Beer can Yeah, you do learn a lot about yourself, and others as well. The military was where I first realized how stupid some people are. Because before then, I had gone to decent schools and everything, where you sort of only get the middle ground of people. But when I did my service it was a true dissection of the population. You had really smart ones, and people who could barely tie their shoelaces, all together. We had to make one guy's bed for a month before he actually learned to do it himself.

I ended up spending a year doing MP/Coastal Ranger stuff, and mostly training future NCO:s. I hold the rank of ensign in the reserve. I still haven't gotten any invites to the refreshing training, I would need to get 5 days of training time to become a lieutenant.
