The Old Folks Home

Well, despite snow covered/packed roads, the sun is shining and I'm going to meet and have (real) Philly Cheese steak subs for lunch w/a friend. I've been a good lad and shoveled out the walkways so I can get to/from the garage and the front door. Clearing that drift was a royal pain... but it's done. I'll let the sun clear the driveway. It's dirt, and I'm not shoveling it. Luckily, the wind blew it mostly clear... only a couple of inches deep. I'll use 4 wheel drive to break through the drift in front of the garage door. Love owning a 4x4 truck!

Very pretty eggs V. Congrats to you both for having your chickens laying in Dec.
We got 2 eggs last night. :(

Well the chicks just arrived and I think I have 2 silkies.
Will y'all look and help me figure out what I have please?

Geez, can we use "phone a friend" or "50:50"? I think you are using "Ask the Audience"

The Meyer catalog (WAY more thumbed through than I would have ever guessed given we aren't planning to get more chicks for a couple of years most likely) says the Rainbow pack guarantees at least 5 breeds so you aren't making it easy on us!

Lots of chipmunks so you might have a number of Easter Eggers. Do they have green legs? The Partridge Chanteclers I got from Ideal in 2012 were also chipmunk and the only way we knew which were the 2 EEs when they arrived was the green legs. But Meyer doesn't sell PCs so you didn't get any of them

My 2 darker (and chipmunk) EEs from Meyer this past June had clearly green legs but the other was so white it could only be distinguished from the White Rocks by a SMALL tint of peach on the head and legs that were green (if you squinted AND convinced yourself they were green).

- Wyandottes can also be chipmunk. So can Barnevelder but since I'm guessing the Rainbow pack would be females they have in excess they wouldn't be throwing in chicks that sell for 3x the common ones.
- If you have any black and white ones with yellow legs, feet and beaks they are likely Black Jersey Giants (which I got instead of the ordered Black Australorps that have pale legs and foot bottoms).
- Other options for black and grayish are Dominique and Plymouth Rocks.
- White leghorn, New Hampshire and White Rock chicks are yellow, maybe the non feather legged white ones? The White Rock's legs will turn very yellow, I don't know about the others.

I'm sure the more knowledgeable will improve on my guesses. I look forward to your weekly picture update

Not silkies but cute!

Look at other feathered breeds that have less than 5 toes.

Brahma or favorelle?

Where are they from?

They are NOT Faverolles since one of their key features IS five toes. Not likely Brahma either given their very light color, maybe White Cochins?

Cheeks look puffy to me but otherwise the photo is out of focus, much too close unless you can use a macro lens. Really any breed coming from hatchery can be missing important stuff like right number of toes, wrong comb etc. They generally are not 'typy' birds like you would get from a breeder. So they can 'vaguely' be the breed they list.

Give them a few more weeks and ask again.

I agree Diva I am not a pro at taking pics. lol I have a pretty good camera. But I am still learning how to use it.
It really does not matter what they all wind up being. I am enjoying them and I will reap the benefits of eggs later on.
