The Old Folks Home

Dh went back to work tonight, after being off 10 days. YAY! Normally, I don't mind him being home, but he's researching his retirement planning. 1 hour we're fine, then he reads more, and the next hour we're sunk, then he reads more, and for the next hour we're fine again, then he reads more, and for the next hour we are sunk again. 3 days solid of that, and I was ready to unplug his computer. His job pays for a great retirement planning service, so it's free to him. I finally started telling him that I didn't want to hear anymore about it until he contacted them, and they crunched all the numbers. It was as bad as looking up an illness online. You can go from hangnail to death in 3 clicks.

Oh I feel your pain.... Different subject but same effect on me. My son is on a rant about three subjects... ALL the time. Politics, Religion, and global warming. I fear I glaze over the moment he starts talking aobut that stuff. He caught me rolling my eyes and he got insulted. 'I was only trying to educate you"

I felt like saying... "I love you dear but turn it off sometimes." I tell him I respect his choice to make descisions how ever he wants on these sjubecets... Me I am kind of middle of the road on them all.

I do understand though it is scary. I was just trying to sign up for something for Medicare and the application they sent me was crazy! I was scared that I would not get my Medicare.
My DH has a retirement plan but he knows he cannot retire until he can get his Medicare as we cannot afford medical insurance.

Hard process to work through! And there are SO many unknowable variables. How long are you going to live, what will your health be like in 5, 10, 20 years. What will the return on the investments ACTUALLY be, how much will inflation eat it up, etc. But I hear you on the "I can't listen anymore" thing since there is no actual progress toward the end goal. But I think it will help when he talks to the planners since he will understand a lot of what they are saying.

Yeah, that is a big one. My wife has RA and has been on Enbrel for 12+ years. Cost is $33K a year without insurance. When I was working we paid $4-5K a year for insurance and $75 for 3 months of Enbrel. When I retired, we were on the " active employee price" for insurance for a year. The next year I discovered that while they will let you play in their pool, they REALLY don't want you there. 3 levels of options. The high deductible one cost $19K/year and had a $1K/person pharmacy limit. The mid deductible cost $24K with a $2,500 limit. The only "viable" one was the low deductible with no pharmacy limit - $29/K year. Fortunately she decided to go work for the US Post Office, no benefits as a supplemental the first 1.5 years but was converted to a regular with immediate benefits last January and we are back to $4,500/year insurance and Enbrel at $95 for 3 months.

My Dr. wanted me on a medication that I could not afford here in the US. So I had a SIL tell me that her sister was taking the same medication but that she bought it from Canada Drugs.
So I talked to my Dr. and he said he would fax them a script. but when the medication came in to bring it in for him to look at. He did and said it was the same medication.
It's just that some countries get medications cheaper than others or make it and sell it cheaper. So I bought 3 times the medication for the same as what it would have cost me here in the USA.
My ex-mother in law went to Mexico once a year for her gold shot and her prescriptions. She could not afford them here either. She only paid 50. in Mexico and that was with seeing the Dr. also.
We all get way over charged for medications here!

It would be very easy for me to pop over to Mexico to get prescriptions and for dental work. The only thing holding me back would be knowing which doctor to contact and the whole language barrier. from my house its a half hour drive to Tecate an our drive to Mexicali and Tijuana.

I was considering Bariatric surgery for a while there is a clinic in Mexicali. They will send a driver to get you bring you there and bring you home. Bariatric surgery generally runs about 30-50 thousand dollars in the US. In Mexico about 10. SAME doctor.

My immediate need would be dental I just need to find out which Doc to go to. I guess If I step into that that would be my gateway.

My sister-in-law found a dentist in Austin, texas that took no insurance, only cash. He actually did GREAT work, and charged very little.

She has insurance, but it didn't cover the teeth work that she needed.

One thing about Mexico if you go to a restraint and ask about which Dr. is best while handing them some cash they will tell you. :)
I do not know the name of the Dr. she saw she is no longer with us. Sorry or I would ask her. But she did not speak Spanish I know so you should be ok. They learn to speak English to be able to help people.
I wish I knew what she called her gold shot! She said it cost her 500. there and that she could not afford it here. She had RA and had to have all her joints replaced one at a time with out any insurance. Good luck but maybe if you ask around down there some people might be able to tell you.

That is nice of that dentist.

I knew a man here that traded his dentist a coon dog worth about 1500. for his teeth to be pulled and dentures. The dentist was very happy as he liked to hunt and Mr. C. had the dog trained already.
