Does working count as a tradition?

Sorry...You sound like my dad, "Labor Day means your supposed to work!"
I've worked almost every Holiday for the last twelve yrs, including Christmas, pay was awesome, but it gets 'old' after awhile. Cows don't give farmers a day off so certain jobs in dairy plants are pretty much write your own paycheck overtime. I was on vacation relief in the processing dept for the last couple yrs, all jobs all shifts all different days off, hours varied, xtra pay, and write your own paycheck...some jobs sucked, some hard to remember and only on them here and there, not worth it...
On a 'cake' job now, only a few know or can do it, so enough overtime still. I don't ever see supervisors or management, no one actually, if someone pops in it scares the crap out of you because no one comes down here.
I was told I was being demanded for the milk receiving bay for Christmas, no I'm not..yes you are, you were in there for yrs, your still qualified...Newbies laughed 'your getting demanded ha ha' nope...Supervisor tells me again that I have to work on Christmas, no I don't...Yeah you do...I said time for the newbies to step up to the plate. They were already demanded for holidays....WHAT!!! no one ever got demanded for many yrs because I worked ALL of them, not doing it anymore... 'Sorry it's your turn' then I let them know....sorry bub, pick who you want, won't be me, I let my state agriculture license for getting the samples run out, and my FDA license for the lab to run the samples...can't do the job legally anymore, I disqualified myself!...'You can't do that!' lol my licenses my choice, show me in our contract, or my current job description that says I have to keep any licenses that do not pertain to my job...nuff said lol, I no longer have to work holidays that I don't want to...

My Job is a lot different--The University encourages us to close down for nearly two weeks. I am using 5 days of vacation to do it but that is ok! I am maxed out on vacation and will not accrue more.

Since I'm retarded... ummm retired, I don't have to worry about that anymore. I feel for ya Beer can... I well remember those volunteer days that led to being taken advantage of. They come to expect it of you. Somehow they get the idea that "once volunteered means forever and always volunteered"... My last job, they closed the plant for ~ the 2-3 weeks around Xmas and new years... if you had vacation time you could use it, otherwise it was without pay. So essentially, they tried to force when you used your vacation time to their benefit rather than the employee. You used it when they wanted or went 2-3 weeks without pay. Nice company. Don't miss them... go figure.

5 minutes till 2016 for me, and I'm off to bed. My son and his family leave tomorrow to return home. I'll be back to my peaceful solitary existence... well, except for the chickens and dogs...

Ham hocks, black eyed peas, collard greens, cornbread, neck bones and rice, and grilled pork tenderloin on our new years menu tomorrow. What is traditional for yall?

Sounds delish.
The only thing that was traditional was pickled herring. That was more of a midnight thing. Both with my family growing up and when I lived in Germany.
I grilled a couple filet mignons for new years eve dinner with baked potato, sautéed veggies

It is around here.
Wife, daughter and son work both days. I used to work every holiday.
I once had a job where there were only 3 of us that had to man a facility 24/7. One Thanksgiving my son was travelling to CO, wife and daughter were going to the in-laws. I couldn't go because I had to work. Since I couldn't be with the family I gave my co-workers the day off by working 32 hours and traded the day for a day off from each of them down the road.

I love Latin Salsa music for housecleaning. Get into the beat and it goes quickly.


Greens & black-eyed peas = luck & money if eaten on Jan 1st.... or so the superstition goes. We have it every New Year's Day.


We're having upwards of 20 folks over tomorrow for a Tamale & Pernil party and, yes, the above greens & BEP will be served along with rice. (Pernil = shredded Puerto Rican pork roast on tortillas).

That sounds delicious too.
I like all kinds of music except most rap and ska.
Our cable company has about 50 channels of every kind of music imaginable. When I don't want to watch TV, I turn it off but route the signal to the stereo speakers.
There are 4 Latin music channels. I prefer the Mexicana and Tropicales channels over the Latino pop and Urbana.
Usually I'll start with reggae though.

I'm getting so many eggs now and they're not all laying yet. Wife made a quiche and sold a dozen at work.
I decided to go to the sushi restaurant up the road to see if I could sell some there.
Funny thing is, no one that works there is Japanese, they're all Chinese. Anyway they usually always want eggs. Being New Year's eve, at first I didn't see anyone I knew. I asked one waitress if she wanted eggs. She misunderstood and told me where the eggs were. Eventually she went out to the car to look at the eggs and took a dozen. She took them back inside and before I left people started coming out of the kitchen and waitress station, bought the other 6 dozen and wanted more.
There was a couple (cook and waitress) and their young son. He was translating for me. I told him he spoke excellent Chinese.

He got a kick out of it.

My last job, they closed the plant for ~ the 2-3 weeks around Xmas and new years... if you had vacation time you could use it, otherwise it was without pay. We always had Christmas eve to January 2 off plus any weekend days that bumped against either end. They wouldn't fire the place up for a single day but would for two so Christmas/New Years break ended up being anywhere from 9 to 12 days. That was paid time off.
The only other time they closed was for a 2 week model change every summer (usually the first 2 weeks of July). If you had vacation, you had to take it during those 2 weeks. So you had to work there for 15 years before you accumulated enough vacation to take any time off besides Christmas and the first 2 weeks of July.
By the time a had enough time to vacation at other times of the year, I was in skilled trades and from then on worked the Christmas break and the summer break. It was sweet for the first time to be able to take a spring or fall vacation.

Working is good for me this year. Staying busy means not thinking.

I'm the boss, so I write the schedule and therefore I did this to myself. I had 2 people that wanted Christmas/New Years off this year. The rule is one off at a time. But I figure if I can make it happen for them, why not. If it means I have to work it, so be it. Someone from another department told me last week she wished her boss could be more like me. I know some bosses feel that rank has its privilege but I used to work for someone who would leave early every Friday, come in late every Monday and never get his hands dirty. It ticked me off. Plus that person had no idea what it was actually like as the rank and file and made asinine decisions because they had no idea what we actually did. When I took his job I vowed to never be that person. I know how to do all the jobs that I supervise and more importantly, because I know how to do them I know how to do them right and how long it takes to do so.
