The Old Folks Home

No goats? I ran across a number of your posts browsing BYH.
Actually, they were scheduled to be here this coming spring. However, now that I've decided to move, They are on hold once again until I find the final resting place and settle in for the remainder of my life. Hopefully, that will include a much bigger area of land than what I have now, making it more conducive to being established as a self sufficient homestead. I hope to be capable of surviving off grid, though remaining within several hours reach of what has been referred to as "civilization".

I'm likely getting rid of my goats this month. I have found takers, now just need to confirm they're who I want to take them. I'll be sad to see them go, I really do love them, but they're just not practical right now. I don't have enough time to milk them, so I've never gotten them pregnant. Their area is low ground and I feel bad for their feet and I can't give them as much attention as they want (ie 16 hours a day, 7 days a week).

They'll likely be going to a couple who already owns a dairy farm and stays at home. They'll be mated and will be milked. They'll have a large barn, a run and a donkey and horse for company.

Yes, goats are fun, but also lots of work.

@Latestarter oh! Fun, stressful, but also exciting and wonderful to move. I hope you find a big place that has the right amount of water (no flooding and washing away, but also no drought). ;)

The coop fairy does chicken clicker training classes at our Humane Society.

I make my own sushi when I can get to the fish market. I have the sushi rice and nori seaweed sheets.
It is very hard to beat the Mikado smorgasbord by my house. There are other excellent places farther away but for the price, they can't be making a dime on me.

Sushi/sashimi are my favs. If I had a sushi rice recipe I would be huge

Today's patient: She had a bit of a limp, and got some meloxicam for it. Karin said she could feel babies in there too, so we should get some mini bunnies in about a week. Sorry about my ugly sweater. *Edit* ...and mug.
Dang you look American. Except for that pre-15 Bruce Jenner sweater

The goats I've been around have all tended to be more like pet dogs... very friendly and social. I have decided I will start with Lamanchas as I want a dairy breed and intend to milk them as I love my dairy food group. I am no longer a working stiff, so will have the time to care for them and be with them. I will most likely start out with large breeds and then purchase one or more Nigerian Dwarf bucks and start breeding mini-manchas. 1/2-2/3 the size, 2/3 the milk, 1/2 the feed costs, 1/2 the space requirements.

I already have the LGD to protect them and expect them to spend most of their days out foraging and free ranging on the acreage I intend to purchase. I expect I'll also be acquiring some meat sheep and meat hogs as well. If I find the right place, I may even get and raise a steer or two. Were I a younger man, I'd be on my way to Alaska... However, as I've aged, I've become less tolerant of winter cold, ice & snow... The sad thing is, I have remained intolerant of blazing heat as well. It seems of the 2 places I've narrowed it down to, I'll have to deal with one or the other.

Thanks Al. I hope the place I eventually get either has year round moving water or spring fed pond(s) on the property. I also hope it to be located outside of any flood plains. When I bought this place, I had envisioned it being my last stop. But that was before I stopped working and retired. Now I really want more self sufficiency, which requires more land/space, much lower cost of living, and further removal/distance between me and what is accepted as "civilization". Though it's becoming much more difficult, I also would like to keep and use my personal freedoms.

I gotta side with Felix and Al... Love the sweater. If I had one I'd wear it! Used to have a really heavy, thick, real wool, white turtle neck pull over many moons ago and long gone now. Loved it!
