Hope y'all over east of the Appalachians are faring OK. Over here on the front range it's ~52, in the sun feels like 70. You could def get a sun burn today. Just went outside in slippers and a T-shirt to check the chooks. Since it's so nice out, I decided to wade through the snow back to the bee hive. Warm enough in the sun today that they should have been moving around. Nope

Opened her up and the bees are all gone except for a few dead ones. Lots of capped honey. <sigh> Oh well, perhaps it's for the better as now I can take both hives with me when I move and not have to worry about bees, or selling them. Blocked the entrance to keep out mice and will deal with it after winter is over.

That is such a bummer. I feel your pain.
I started last spring with 2 packages and 1 nuc. I only have one hive now. The nuc and one of the packages didn't last. I'm babying these. I put a candy board on them a couple months ago. Then I added a pollen patty a couple weeks ago.
I remember you congratulating me on catching a swarm last summer. Apparently they only spent a couple nights in the trap and then flew the coop for greener pastures.
I'm going to be diligent with traps this year. I have a gardening apprentice that wants to learn bees so hopefully we can catch 2 swarms this year - one for each of us.

I have industrial lug-sole no-back clogs I wear out for quick trips to check on the chooks. That way I just slip out of slippers and into clogs and don't have to sit down to put shoes on. They're heavy and, yes, I have worn them out in the snow.

I use cheap deck shoes in warm weather cause no poop sticks in the tread free soles. In winter, I'm using some fairly smooth soled insulated boots my daughter bought me a couple Christmases ago.

Latestarter my hubby has mentioned wanting to keep bees. I believe his father had some, years ago. I may let him look for some. Sorry to hear you lost all yours.

SCG, I used to have some saved, will see if I can find any.

Order the bees now.
They sell out so fast, if you wait another month or two you won't be able to buy any.

Did anyone happen to see the new audi commercial featuring a small coop and baby chicks with the woman crushing an egg? Followed up by a cameo of a goat (with horns) that appeared to maybe be an alpine or sannen? I was so caught off guard that the goat was gone before I could concentrate a look at it.

Echoing what CC said, if you want bees this spring, you'd best get your order in now! They are pretty much sold out by the end of this month. And with the continuing dead outs, they may already be sold out. Wishing you luck on a few swarm captures! That's the way to go if you can do it.

Pardon my ignorance, but what kind of bags? I don't think I've seen whatever the logo is on those, can't tell what it is even "bigified".

Those are the purple cloth type bags for Crown Royal... hence the worry over handling a rotary cutter...

You can see the reduction in bag quality over the years. I've been up and personal with these bags the last week. I'd still like 20 to 30 more.
