Yeah... I was thinking welded wire/goat fence, with an electric strand at the top....

I could cough up the money for that at my horse paddock... But my mind boggles at how much it would cost to buy that much fence for my two acre pasture.

I have a lovely two acre pasture with four strand electric.... Wonder if I could talk them into being " good" and stay inside it just for tge summer months.

I saw a great one made out of old tires filled with dirt....

I also like the idea of making a dog house shelter with a flat roof that is connected to all the play....

Hi everyone. I was absent a couple days because a Microsoft update seriously messed up my computer, and I had to start over from scratch. I keep a 500 GB backup hard drive stored in the bottom slot of my computer, and only connect it to do a backup, or to restore everything on the rare occasion that I need to. I plugged in my back up drive, and it was EMPTY. Not only was it empty, but it GREW. It was a 1TB drive. I was searching through my drives when Dh came over, and asked what I was doing. When I explained, he told me I would not find it. Last week, a friend of mine, and her husband came over, for Dh to help him with a computer problem he was having. The men worked on the computer, and we women visited. The men were engrossed in what they were doing, so she and I went to get pizza for all of us to eat. While we were gone, it was decided he needed another hard drive. Dh decided that instead of giving away one of the extra 1TB hard drives, he remembered seeing the smaller 500 GB drive in my computer, so he would give me the bigger 1TB hard drive, and give away the smaller one. After all, it was just sitting there, not plugged in, so no big deal, and he would tell me what he had done, just in case the little hard drive was important. Guess who FORGOT to tell me about the entire hard drive swap? Ok, I grabbed one of our copies of Windows 7, and off I go. I worked about 2 hours, when Dh decided he'd better check to make sure I got the right copy, because HIS product ID is now registered for life when he installed Windows 10. OF COURSE I had his copy, so I grabbed my copy, and back to the drawing board. Yes, I got it installed, and then got hit with Windows Updates. I had 322 updates to download, and install. It took forever. Ok, I finally got finished with the updates for Windows, then I installed Microsoft Office. Over 100 more updates. Good grief! I've still got a few more programs to put back in, but putting all the other programs in has not taken nearly as long as those darned updates. WHEW! Once I get done, I WILL back it all up. I may secure it with barbed wire, and a big padlock too.

If it were me there would be ----- to pay I would be livid. Glad you are back again

I am thinking that I could partion off the barn, make a small part the run in goat shelter and waterer, and then keep the rest for junk storage. It is a good size, uh.....uh..... Dang, can't remember how big... Maybe 16 or 20 by 24 or 30.

Anyway... I would think the goat run-in would only need to be an 8x8 or there about.

For the horses we took a water trough, surrounded it with plywood, filled the empty space between the trough and the plywood with foam, and covered half of the top of the water trough with plywood.

I am thinking goats would happily drown themselves in such a set-up. But maybe two goats would be happy with a water bucket? Probably a feedbucket, held to the wall with sturdy straps.

I already have most of the barn painted in "anti-cribbing" paint. I wonder how long that stuff is "good" for. I guess I will ask my sisters how much wood their goats eat.

Goats HATE getting wet.... water would be a non issue. Unless it was littleuns. My goats only liked stripping bark off the trees in their yard. they girdled a Paloverde and stripped some bark off their only shade tree. They tasted wood but left it alone.

If you go with horse anti climb fence do a rub bar at about shoulder height. That way they can rub till their little reprobate hearts are content and not mess with your wire.

Actually the best fence I have seen for goats was picket fence. they cant get a purchase to assist in jumping they have rub surfaces and its simple to construct. Boards spaced close enough so they cant get their heads through.

I am seriously considering getting a milk goat.

Okay. I'll be the voice of reason here just a little bit.

The hardest thing in the world, IMHO, is if you have to take a trip finding a goat sitter willing to milk twice a day.

And, from experience, goat milking by hand is a sure-fire way to kick in the carpal tunnel. So if you cannot milk by hand is a quart or two of goat milk worth all the cleaning of milking equipment on the time=$$ continuum?

Just two items and my two cents. Otherwise, go for it. Goats are fun! (sez she who used to breed Pygmy goats and run a midwifery for show goats)

What about Boer goats, you don't have to milk them do you? As long as they have kids? Won't they just dry up if you don't milk? Not much good info out there on them and having to milk....
