The Old Folks Home

We knocked out our anniversary, his bday, and Mothers day on our beach trip the weekend of May 9

My Youngest daughter chose to have Pho for her birthday last year. We went to a place called Pho King in Davis. Pho is a Vietnamese noodle soup dish and it has a lot of variations. It is very tasty.

Thanks Ron. They are mostly dirty white not RIR just thinking they must have some of the hy-line brown in them that you mentioned.
I have the three hens in with my CCL mostly because of size. Some are saying this cross will produce abundant blue egg layers.

Two have recently hatched under broody

Do your TJ's pullets lay light brown eggs or pearl white?

Since there are some brown genes that are in the gene pool, you should get blue to mint green eggs.

My experience is that the pullets do lay a lot of eggs. Crossing should increase the blue eggs when crossed with a blue egg layer.

What do the chicks look like?

TJ's lay white eggs. The brown to tan feather color is on their backs and not much of it.

Chicks are mainly white I think I saw a black feather earlier but not seeing it now.

Was going to post a pic. But editor isn't cooperating. Try later. I thought I had lost the last TJ's cross chick last night. It was the last to hatch and I put her with the hen last night. No sighting of her when feeding hen and chicks. When I stood back to watch I could see its feet wiggling in hens feathers. :yesss:

I have 15 pullets from my NYD hatch--They are a mix of Whole Foods and Trader Joes. So far, it looks like 4 of them lay white eggs. The rest are tinted brown.

Leghorns and I assume the Hy-Line 36 hens, have a brown suppressor gene. If that is passed on, it should suppress any brown color genes in the CCLs. Sadly, most of them do not lay true blue eggs.

Keep us updated!

Bummer on the blue eggs hope they will. My CCL's don't lay a good blue egg as I see it but still blue. One is a really rough egg so I won't try to hatch them. None of the CCL's have hatched yet, but the TJ's cross has.

The VA covered a CPAP w/humidifier for me (based on a previous test which gave the same results) but I couldn't sleep with it. Like you, it kept needing adjustment, was too loud and I toss and turn a lot so it was like having my face tethered to something off the side of the bed. In addition, even with the humidifier, my mouth and sinuses kept drying out. After a couple of weeks I sent it back. This test was the start of the process (the test was the first part) of getting me set up for an oral appliance. I haven't heard anything further since the results, but have a reg appt set up this week so will check into what's going on.

I hope it works for you as well as it does for me.

Ok, for those that are selling their eggs..what do you sell a doz. for? I think I am low. But, I am in Utah County. I sell a doz. for 2.50. Going a bit lower than what they are going for in the store, their supposedly free range eggs.

I started selling excess eggs the end of 2012 two 2 friends at work at $2.50/doz. They were pullet eggs so I couldn't justify charging more. But I never changed the price for them. Stopped working July 2013 but I still deliver eggs to them weekly WHEN I have them. They have been VERY good about the "dry times". And one of them had given me FREE an old garden tractor with deck and blower (which I used 2 years then sold for what I put into it) and the other had a maple that was cut down and I got 2 weeks of heat for my house from that so I think they are paying enough. Things were good this past winter because I have the 7 pullets that laid starting in Nov. Tons of eggs now with the 4 Y/O girls back in production. So many I was eating eggs 7 days a week. But I just found 2 people in my old neighborhood that are happy to pay $4/dozen for eggs from "happy, spoiled, range pretty much whenever they want to" chickens. That is a little more than the cheap eggs at the health food store but less than many of the brands they sell. Plus I write the chicken's name, date of lay and weight in grams on each egg. None of this "use by" 2 months from now dates where you have no idea how old the egg is that you just bought. With mine they KNOW they were laid yesterday or the day before.

By my calculation, excluding the cost to convert the stall to a coop and the cost of the original 12 chickens, I figure every dozen eggs the girls produce costs me $2.40. I am reusing cartons, if I had to pay for those the cost of sold eggs would have to go up. I sure don't need thousands of them to bring the cost down.

I have more eggs than I can possibly use. I used to sell them, but didn't like the "feast or famine" cycles or trying to time worming with molt but not too close. It just became too much trouble. THEN I would take extra eggs to work to give away. People were thrilled to get them as long as I was giving them away, but one day I sent out an email saying I had some for sale and not one person bought any. I don't bother anymore. We eat what we want and the dogs get the rest. This is my countertop this morning.

Pretty sad Wisher. They couldn't even manage to pay what it would cost for battery cage egg at the store?

Yeah... It kills me, I saw a charity organization handing out chips and soda to homeless folks in Anchorage.... I asked, turns out that BY LAW, they may not make sandwiches and hand them out...it has to be prepackaged store bought single serving things.

One could argue that eggs ARE prepackaged in single servings.

Yep, found cans of peaches in the back of the pantry with "best by" dates of 2013 and 2014. No bulging in the cans, fruit is fine.

I'm not sure that will decrease the PTSD!!! But I see in a later post you got them out.

Wow tomatoes already down there? I just got my garden in last weekend, well, most of it, anyway. The kitchen garden still needs to be planted. I meant to do that last week but working overnights really kicked my butt and I didn't get to it. Supposed to be 90 up here tomorrow. Unfortunately over about 75 I think I'm going to die so I'll be waiting another day at least to get the kitchen garden in the ground. I am trying to plant watermelon again this year. I know better, I do, but I keep trying. It's just too cool and too short a season up here, even for the hybrids.

I tried to acclimate back to days today. Went to bed with BF at 9, woke up before midnight thinking it had to be time to get up. Nope. I've got to work nights again next week and I'm thinking at this point I shouldn't try to acclimate back to being alive during the day only to re-acclimate back to nights for Tuesday. The big issue though is that he's working days (his weekend to work, too) so I have to be quiet if I'm here. My sewing machine is probably less than 10 feet from the bed, so there goes that idea.

I am hoping to get my tomatoes in this weekend. But the girls have been scratching in the garden, popped up at least some of the Fortex beans and likely the Suyo cukes. I didn't see any cuke seeds but they likely would have eaten them if I the scratched them up. Won't know for about a week where I have to replant. They did not do this last spring. Thus the first task is 8' tall 2x2s (which I have from something else) and 7' bird netting to attach to the posts of the 2' high fence with chicken wire (probably to keep out rabbits) that the prior owners put up. Some chickens just hop on the fence then over, others go to the gate opening (with no gate, another thing to deal with).

Yes eggs are individually wrapped. Good thought

Don't know which is worse chickens or gophers. One second in the garden and its lost.

I stopped at the sleep study area before the appointment and talked to them. They had wanted to schedule me for another full blown overnight sleep study with CPAP... I said NO! I explained I'd already been there and done that and the CPAP would not work for me, that I was hoping to go the oral device route. The guy I needed to talk to was involved at the time so got his # and Ext and was told he would call me. He did. Went over it all again. In the mean time, my doctor explained that since I am not 100% disabled, I don't have dental coverage, so the dental department would turn me down if she placed a consult... The consult would need to come from the EN&T department to have a chance. But she could schedule me for a pre-op evaluation to be operated on

I asked how it was that they'd pay 5-7 thousand for an operation but not a couple of hundred for an oral device... Government...
The "funny" part is, I'd end up getting billed for the time as well as the appliance since I'm not covered, so no loss to them regardless. So anyway, now I'm waiting for an EN&T appointment to be evaluated. Also got an auditory exam scheduled for possible hearing aids... dang... getting old.

This past Thanksgiving, I was going to have a full table of guests so decided to make pies, which I haven't done for many years. I had some old canned fruit in the cupboard and used it. the pies came out great and were delicious. The canned fruit expired back in 2007/08... They're all used now (cans) and weren't replaced

Panic is revving up.

I am leaving spouse and kids for three weeks to go see my ornery and not yet dead, could hold on another year, sickly father.

I hate travel.... I hate new things... I hate lots of people... The house will probably be exploded, and all livestock dead before I get back home.
At least spouse cooks well... So spouse and kids should be alive when I return.

I have to wash my clothes... I have to find my clothes... I have to find clean warm weather clothes that fit me AND do not have stains OR tears :barnie

Dont wanna.

Maybe I won't, maybe I will just get one set of travel clothes, and be done with it. At least that way, being old and stinky and crumpled, I am less likely to get robbed. :old

There is no coffee at my parents house ...except for 12 year old folgers crystals...

I HATE spending money... But they also have no coffee maker, AND there are no proper small mom and pop coffee shops down there, just Starbucks :sick where they use all sorts of wierdo words and then hand me something that doesn't taste right..... Or McDonald's coffee...they have that too

And my mom and baby sis have been loosing their minds over my dad, he is being SUPER difficult... I am supposed to show up and somehow help.

At least I know where a pair of summer/city shoes are... I wont have to show up in the big city with my clunky all year/winter boots.

Just :barnie
