Last year I tried insecticidal soap for squash bugs. Didn't work that well, although dropping them in a cup of soapy water did - and I didn't have to deal with guts.

Sorry they got you back that way SCG.

May try some traps next year if you guys think they're helpful.

I always try to plant my squashes at the last possible moment (they've just this week poked out of the ground). I figure let the squash bug wave be somebody else's problem and, hopefully, by the time my plants are prolific the invasion will be over. There's still a good harvest well into Fall.

Hi stranger. May try that strategy next year. Last year I planted really early, and by the time I was overrun by squash bugs, I was also overrun with squash! So I ended up yanking the plants.

This year my garden is fallow.

LOL. There are three volunteer mammoth Russian sunflowers out there. Does that count?

This year we've got 14 tomato plants, 21 pepper plants, 2 tomatillos, lemon cucumbers, pole beans, 10 eggplants, 9 sweet potatoes, 4 types of squash in 8 mounds, and lima, romano, yellow wax and purple teepee beans. All were planted mid-June or later.

SCG, was it you that had a bumblefoot problem that just kept going? I'm having a similar issue with one of my poor Calls... pulled the nasty core out at least 4 times now... never had one like this, usually they get little tiny scabs, I soak, clean off and they're good to go... this one is huge and ugly... :/

I've just been swamped with work this year and just got back from babysitting in Denver. Where did the time go? Been layering lots of organic matter on the garden beds and should be great to plant in next year.

Yes and I'm sad to say the turkey is still alive and we're bringing her back in tomorrow for her 436098th bumblefoot treatment. I know I should just cull her. She's coming inside with a (young) leghorn. I'm telling you, it's certain breeds at this house. I had leghorns when I first got birds and all of them had revolving bumble. They all died early, too, of internal laying. Last year I got 2 leghorn chicks from the feed store, and one already has a bumble. She's coming inside tomorrow with the turkey. Unfortunately the turkey goes on hunger strike when we bring her in, so I'm thinking it's good that we have a second bird to treat now, so they can be (lame) friends and maybe the turkey will eat.

Or they'll just fight to the death down there. That's more my luck.

The oral metronidazole worked very well on her, but didn't completely cure it. It was the best her feet have looked, though. I've got a new plan to pack her feet this time with something different.
