The Old Folks Home

Alaskan - what a great weight does, he have any grown up sons to take over the practice?

Oh, and while you are still listening, WHAT did you win those ribbons for at the fair? How about some transparency?

I don't think he has any kids.... No apprentice or anything. :barnie

Transparency? I am as transparent as a block of iron! :lau

Well, the home inspection was done today, and all the testing done. Everything looked real good. Dh got to see the home for the first time. Apparently he's been getting a lot of flack at work for trusting his wife to pick the home, without him seeing it. What they don't realize, if we had waited until his day off, so he could go see it, someone else would have already bought it. Yes, the good ones go that fast here. The only real complaint he has is the tile floors. Like I told him, we can carpet the hallway, and bedrooms later on, and we can get some area rugs for the living, dinning room areas, but I don't want them carpeted.

The vet our family used for years was like that. He took his time, would let us look at blood, fecal slides under his microscope, etc. He liked fish, and dad would always take him a mess of fish for his family when we went. One afternoon me, and a friend of mine, loaded up one of the dogs to take into him to check over. When we got there he was in surgery, so the new vet began checking my dog over. The receptionist came into the room, and told me the other vet wanted to see me, so off I went, with friend in tow. We were standing back by the doorway, and the vet and I began chatting. After a minute or two my friend asked me if the vet was doing what she thought he was doing. I told her yes, he was spaying the Chihuahua on the table, which is why I didn't enter the room. She fainted.

The sad truth about things is that new grad Docs coming out of school are carrying student loans of at least more than 350,000 $ on their shoulders and need to work in big metro areas where there is a high patient load in order to even stand a chance of paying it back and being able to pay the bills the practice generates. That is why it is so hard to get doctors to come into a rural or remote area. We know because my husband and I are retired medical professionals and we tried to get a young doc to step into our practice and couldn't for that reason. They all need to be in big practices with many partners in order to survive. I imagine the same goes for veterinarians also, Our medical care is in a sad state where the only docs you will find are in large multi doctor practices in larger cities. Even in our small town the doctors come in from surrounding cities and are only in clinics 2-3 days a week. We are lucky to have a vet though that is in his office full time. Unfortunately he doesn't do avian medicine and trust me, I've begged the man to no avail.

Maybe if your area generated some perks that would get doctors interested in moving to Alaska you would stand a chance of getting a replacement for your Vet when the time comes. Paying off student loans, free housing, whatever it takes.

We know one doctor who went to Alaska to work for the Indian Health Services and flies to the Aleutian Islands every week to practice. She is paid by the government and her husband is in a private practice. Maybe there is some sort of subsidized program that is similar that would provide a vet for your area.

@Alaskan, your doctor sounds like a gem even if he is feeble. So much experience and knowledge that he is willing to share. That is hard to find in today's world. He needs a vet tech at least who would be willing to travel with him and help him.

You should have him tell his workmates that not only did I find the house for us here in PA but I bought it for both of us with a power of attorney. Now DH did get to see the house once before we bought but he trusts me.

I totally agree. If any of my kids were at all interested in any kind of medicine I would toss one at him... But none of mine are.

Talking of wives buying houses...

My mom did that, and did the entire move...while my dad was out of town for work.

My dad loves telling the story...

He got off the plane, got into the taxi and told the guy he was going home, and gave the guy the address...when they pulled up the driver asked my dad if it was the correct house...my dad said he had no idea, he had never seen it before...did it match the address?

That's pretty much how it will go for my DH too Alaskan. By the time he gets to the house, I will have all the boxes unpacked. I probably won't have all the pictures hung yet but everything else will be done to include fencing for the dogs, a water line to the fridge for the icemaker and a garbage disposal installed. I am hiring people to do those things though. I just either don't have the time or the knowhow to do them. I am also getting a new washer/dryer combo and I splurged on a new stove. I'm pretty sure the stove is the original which is fine but I want something more up to date. After all of that is done, then I can start thinking of the other upgrades I want to do. It will be a slow process to get everything done I want to. The good news is that nothing HAS to be done. The house was move in ready and very well taken care of just a bit outdated.
