The Old Folks Home

Day one of the fair; our animals were settled in without incident. All three of my minis are being housed together in one large stall. Betsy is happy as a clam; this little guy is in the stall next door:

Syd is ticked. If this little gelding was a horse, Syd would be keeping the others away from him ("my boyfriend - stay away!"), but Syd has never liked donkeys, she thinks they are loud.

Syd is dd #3's name Lol! Named after her grandfather dw's side, Sidney, she's Sydnie though..., Syd for short. Don't hear that name often, man or beast.

I'd like to know that one myself. Once upon a time my parents had Orkin pest control and they used traps like that or similar. I remember the service guy had to come back to dump he trap but I never knew how he dumped them. The traps are very reliable.

Speaking of traps--nothing in mine this morning. I'm hoping the one I killed was a lone female looking and finding new territory and I caught her before she started to reproduce. Question now is where did she come from? Our nearest neighbor is a quarter+ mile away. We have only seen mice in the barn, there are no brush piles near either the coop or the barn although we do have dense timber around us.

Does anybody know how far these things can travel?

Quote: Syd was named after her previous owner's niece, who spells her name the same way as the Australian city. I saw no need to change it, though it has caused some confusion in the past. Considering how difficult she was as a young horse, I was once asked if she was named after the kid in 'Toy Story.'

I really like these..and of course the good ol reg. mouse trap..where the chickens can't get to them.

They can get in, but they can't get out. We've caught 5 in there at once.

Do they make a rat size one?

Ok, I'll bite. How do you get them back out?

Looks like the top is hinged. I don't know exactly how you would get them out for destruction if you aren't just going to rehome them elsewhere on your property (where they might just follow you back).

fell down last night got my feet tangled in some blankets and wound up behind the door sitting on some stuff that needs to be tossed out. Tried to grab the door knob and only caught my nails on the strike plate.

So Here I am sitting with my back against the wall feet wound up in a blanket and nothing to get leverage on to roll my self over. Oh and my full weight is up against the door. The door opens in and i am thinking the fire department will have to cut the whole door down to get me out.....

and that No one would hear me till morning. so I rolled and twisted enough to get the blanket out and can move my foot... Then Gritted my teeth for the pain and rolled over on to my hands and Knees. that took a while to get my center of balance to cooperate... Oh Pain.... but now I can get leverage on the corner of the bed and streighten out my legs and push my self backwards.....

Yay on my feet ... I tossed the blanket where It needed to be and went to bed.

Soon as grandma finishes her breakfast I am heading out for coffee.... and back to do some serious planning for hoeing out my bedroom....

did I mention I was an aweful house keeper....

Deb, I'm glad to hear that you managed to extricate yourself with nothing more than your dignity wounded!

But somehow, that reminded me of an old gag line - "can you open your closet without hurting yourself?"

Quote: Yes the top is hinged and I dont think they make a rat sized one.

Rats are special cases because they are much muuch smarter than mice. Where you can plug a hole in the wall with steel wool to keep mice out rats simply remove the steel wool and go in.

What I did for rats... in my last house was hang those pickle buckets up with one bite. three holes in the sides and one in the top to let them go in and investigate... I had two dogs at the time and I hung the buckets up so the dogs wouldnt get the poison. I had to refill the bucket four or five times.

Believe me when I say and others say. If you see one rat there are more.... Many Many Many more.

I had an old dog couch sitting under my front window and on the dirt of my planter. one day I saw a rat scurry under it. i pulled the couch out and it escaped into a hole under the planter. I sicked my dog Rosie on to it... *(pre poison) She dug and dug and removed at least a yard of dirt. She caught and shook to death at least three young adults and uncovered two nests that had six or seven Pinkies each.... Rosie was sooo good when I would tell her to drop the rat when it was dead she immediately tossed it down and went for another in the hole. Same for the pinkies I told her to leave them so I could pull them out count them and toss them.

It was after that that I opted for poison. I had decomp smell through out the house for a couple of weeks once they started dieing.... They were in the over head crawl space. I found one in the storage room that had died and it was the size of a bedroom slipper. Body was the size of my shoe.....
