Sad thing about the fish, but glad they caught the guys.

Went and paid for a dump truck load of concrete sand today. It will be delivered Monday. That stuff has gotten very expensive. When we get it spread, it should be a little over 6 inches. I'm thinking about a dump truck load, or two of clean fill dirt on top of the sand. That should elevate, and provide good drainage too, so my coop will be high, and dry.

Ok, sharing this..so excited! I know you all have had an egg color you've gotten excited over...right? Well of course.

I almost sold this EE of mine. She has taken her sweet time to lay. Glad I didn't! She is an OE! I love Olive colored eggs. This one is dark, but love there are no speckles. Hoping it stays that way, and, if it turns a bit lighter in time, I won't mind a bit. Nice size too for a first egg. Whoot.




This is the girl. Quite pretty hen.

Awesome! When I culled all but giant's and nakeds I just had to keep the EEs. One lays dark olive. I was hoping when I hatched them crossed to Wellie they would be darker and spotted like the wellie eggs, nope, the two both lay lighter eggs than the mom and no spots...

Gorgeous - both the hen and egg. I have one EE that lays a dark green egg with speckled brown spots. I love these critters.

I lost a NN hen this week. That brings me down to 1 regular NN (my first ever turken, she's about 6.5 years old) and 1 showgirl.

I made a startling discovery today. I bought two bags of cracked corn from the local MFA co-op about 3 weeks ago. I opened the second bag today without giving it much thought and left the empty bag for DH to use for trash in the shop. Both bags have been inside, in our shop since I bought them with rain only one day and that was day before yesterday. DH brought the empty bag to me and and asked me if I'd looked inside it because it looked like the inside layer of the bag was peppered with nickel sized white powdery spots. I hurried up and looked at the new bag I'd opened last night and sure enough, it was the same way. I even dumped it out into a big garbage can I use to store feed in and the bag was marked with these same nickel sized powdery mildew like deposits on the inside of the bag.

No way I am feeding this second bag to my birds. I've always trusted the local co-op as we are Farm Bureau members but no more.

DH is going to get a picture for me but my best guess is mildew. Anybody ever seen anything like this? Now I have to worry about whether or not my birds are going to get sick from the first bag of cracked corn. As nobody has curled up their toes and died yet I'll take that as a good sign but this second bag is destined to feed the wild birds, squirrels and turkeys.

@microchick I got almost halfway through a bag of TSC layer pellets and there was fist size chunks of hard green mold feed. Took it back. Next day sent dw to pick up a bag of starter and she said they had a half bag of layer pellet taped up and half price...

Yes, our local Blue Seal has pretty much all their cracked corn like this. It's from the moisture in the corn on the inside of the paper bag. As long as the feed isn't moldy, I use it. I returned so many bags before realizing it was pretty common. My birds only get corn in the real cold months but they haven't died from it.
