Couldn't help but notice the "French doors" behind you. I used to have a set like that in a previous residence and hated them... was like; what's the point in putting the hinges in the center between the doors? Completely defeats the purpose of being able to open both and have a grand entryway...

So why the costume? Halloween party or something?

SCG! Love the costume. I kept looking to see if there were any fake eggs on the floor.

The Spitz's are gorgeous! First time I've seen pictures of them.

As for the weather. We slept in this morning and woke up to snow. Good grief! AND a winter weather advisory. They weren't calling for anything even close to that last night. Now the weather forecast is saying freezing drizzle and then drizzle later on today. Now how can you have liquid precip when the temp is only going to be up to 28 degrees F? Then 1 to 3 inches of snow over the weekend and bitter cold with lows to -6 and 28mph winds. Not much you can do other than batten down the hatches and ride it out.

I've padded out my coop with extra roosters like hatcheries do with shipped chicks and they so far haven't showed any sign of frostbite. I need to check them when I go out to open the pop door in a bit. I put extra leaves down on Wednesday, the Sept youngsters are still holed up in the nesting boxes and every one else is tucked onto the roost. A lot of my ventilation comes from not making the coop air tight. Lots of air leakage around the door which is away from the roosts. I covered the high open window with plastic as it provides air for the birds in the summer and I am sure it is probably leaking air. I'm using a heated dog water dish, one gallon size to keep them hydrated. Putting electrolytes in the water is a good idea. Think I will do that also.

I have it set up so I can add a heat bulb to my overhead lighting system that DH put in for me but I hate doing it. I'd rather the birds tough it out.

The latest cooking fad is bone broth, the gloppier and thicker the better. Chicken feet are full of gelatin and flavor. *Now* there is a demand for them.

Both sets of my grandparents, and my mother spoke, of peeling and cleaning the chicken feet, and cooking them with whatever chicken dish they were serving. By the time I came along, they were buying store bought chickens, which didn't come with the feet.

I was a pre-teen the first time we moved overseas. They had the market square there, where you bought the bulk of your food from the locals. Chickens were in cages, you picked your chicken, then they killed, cleaned it, wrapped it in butcher type paper, and dated it, right there. They always included the feet, which mom would dispose of. She always said they were too much work, for too little reward to fool with.

We became friends with the family of one of my dad's co-workers. The wife invited us to eat, and was fixing an authentic Dominican dish. She brought out this big pot of food, lifted the lid, and there were chicken feet floating in it. My younger brother sort of freaked, and refused to eat anything with chicken feet in it. I simply scooped out my portion, but left the feet in the pot. My mother served my brother's portion minus feet too. Our hostess scooped out a chicken foot with her portion, and began eating to show my brother it was ok. Yeah, traveling overseas we learned to eat a lot of things that would have otherwise horrified our sensibilities.

The bales worked. (They're in behind the equipment. The roosters were accessing them. Not that I got pics of that.

Most still like to roost on posts on the post pounder. And my old sawhorse. That' thing is about 20 years old...lol. SO handy!



Poor Mr. Shuster. That looks more than superficial.

Mr. Maran (just a name) is #2... I hope that's just superficial.

Both are EEs hatched this year. The first guy's comb isn't bothered like the rest. None of the parents have straight combs...lol.

I was at my sewing teachers house. The new pajamas were a gift. I brood in the house for about 4 to 6 weeks then they go outside. I only do heat for 14 or so days when they hatch.

I have my Halloween chicks still under a light, (it's only 125 watt) in the building with the roosters. I plan on moving them to the coop as soon as it turns nice.

I'm "trying" to get all the co-op feed used up by feeding it to them. Co-op feed has monensin in it. Toxic to guineas. I have guineas in the coop.

If I don't use it up I can see myself forgetting what that little bit of feed is...and killing my guineas later on.

I'm having the worst time trying to get chick starter. Everyone just looks at me like I'm crazy when I ask for it. No all flock raiser here. I'm in discussion with a mill that does custom order batches that are pallet size (40-25kg bags) Chick starter is approximately $3 less than the bags I can get around here. Grower is $4 less. I want starter. Even with having to drive 2 hours away...the savings are undeniable. I just have to make sure the crumbles are small enough for OEGB. Having a hard time with that too...crumbles too large. Learning ALL the time...lol.
