The Old Folks Home

yep. normally that is my 'oh crap' go to and always at least number 2 on my fix it list. This time I just got a slew of errors, different every time I tried including the dreaded registry error. That was my first clue I was in deep doodoo this time. Just tried one last time "what the heck just in case" after all the other changes I've tried, going all the way back behind all of the recent critical updates. This time the message was basically "have no idea why it didn't work but it failed'.Oh well, can't complain. Just wasn't ready to concede defeat, hoping someone knew something I didn't about the new OS. I hardly used it at first but it's still roughly 7 yrs old, this fn thing is just the last quirk it''s recently developed and the battery is completely DOA (only holds a charge for less than 20 min.) soit's time to transfer to the new one while I still can tho i do have everything up in several clouds

See you all hopefully by Monday if the net isn't drug down too much by the weekenders.

Thanks again Ron for trying to help. verymuch appreciated.
My guess is that either the drive or the memory is going bad on you. It is hard to tell which without testing. You can get errors like that, have the drive test as good so you clean install windows. A week or two later, errors start coming back. That is from bad memory modules.

The solid state drives are coming way down in cost. I upgraded my work drive ant two laptops to solid state drives last summer.

It might be better to move to the new computer you have though. When computers like the old one start doing stuff like this, it is often an indication that the system board is failing and you would need to rebuild. Since new computers are always much faster and capable than the old ones, spending a bunch on them is not often very economical.

If you find out, let me know.

I also somehow got into the "test" facebook group - they push weird things out to my facebook page to try them out before deciding to kill it or push it out to everyone. The latest one is pop up boxes every time someone comments on a post. I hate it, with a passion. I end up with all these boxes all over the place. There's no way to opt out, that I've found, either.

If it wasn't a great place to keep up with friends and quilting, I'd get rid of it in a second.
Ditto. Me too. I just X them out for now. hopfully their test run will end soon.

That is the same conclusion I reached. Either a HD corruption in a critical area or, because of other "quirks" just prior to this, the more likely, at least IMHO, i'm about to suffer a catastrophic MB failure. not worth the $ (just took 3 key presses at once to generate that symbol,

) since this Toshiba was just not that expensive.
Ok, time to give this thing a proper burial. The keyboard is now starting to do a whole new set of crazy!!!

My new computer also does something crazy since it did that dumb update. Every time I am trying to type if I bump the space bar it opens all kinds of crazy boxes that I don't know what the heck they are! It did not do this untill it did that last update. And I had even turned of all updates! How the heck can I get rid of Cortana?
Actually you can just ask cortana to tell you how to remove it and it will show you all the websites/videos that tell you how..

Quote: That's crazy, maybe you could go through the help section. Sometimes I do that to get someone's attention. I hope you find an answer for that. I also hate those boxes.

The box that opens on mine is sometimes across the bottom of my screen and all kinds of symbols on it and sometimes on the side with arrows and symbols. I have no idea what it is.

Quote: I have tried all kinds of stuff to get rid of it. I did once. And the next day it was right back! The tech sites tell you but Microsoft put's it right back on. I may quit using my computer all together and just use my phone. It's ridiculous to spend 1000.00 on a computer that you can not get it the way you want it to work.
