The Old Folks Home

lilwildrabbit you can see our feed room is the size of a closet it's the little grey building with the white door leaning against it. We only have one metal 55 gal.drum with a locking lid in it now but there is room for 2 and some yard tools and a shelf with a window. Wicked we burn off this pasture every spring and your right it does help keep the numbers of pest's down and helps fertilize the grass and trees. Please don't mind the junk laying around. I was not able to keep up much the last couple of years. But we are working on some clean up this year. Scg thanks for sharing your potato method. I have a couple small red potatoes growing sprouts and I just took several more out of the fridg so hopefully they will also sprout.
Yep looks like what I have used while hauling logs lol

Chickadoodles your pasture and land looks fine. 'Stuff' happens, especially on a farm. We try to do a little burning every spring. This year we burned off the east end of our pond and you are right, it really does good things to the soil.

My big problem is weeds right now due to me not being able to get up and down due to the infection I had in my SI joint in my pelvis. I was just out tugging out weeds from last year that had taken over my strawberry and asparagus bed. There is always something to do.

Is it easy to plant in tires I have a few around I could use

I halve or even lower 55gal plastic barrels and also use buckets for some stuff.
Burlap sacks are expensive new. I'd like to have a bunch for storing potatoes and onions. Thinking about buying a roll of the stuff and sewing my own, fraction of the price.

Spray them with soapy water with some vinegar in it. It kills them. You can use a spray bottle with a stream instead of a mist for more control.

re: taters. Tried the bag method - things dried out way too quickly and I had to water twice a day. And that was Maine. We ended up building something similar, let me see if I can't locate a picture... So the bottom rung has fabric stapled to the bottom, and the upper "stilts" are permanently connected. However, the next rungs are just slid over the top and rest without being permanently attached. Keep adding a rung and then adding dirt. This method worked much better. They didn't dry out near as bad as a fabric or plastic bag and were contained a lot better. The yield was better, but I found I was mostly harvesting taters from the top and bottom sections, few in the middle. From only a few pounds of seed potatoes we really got a good yield. Don't forget to chet (chit?) them a few days before planting. The boxes lasted 4 ish years before being in bad condition.
Those look high class. Me... I toss potatoes on the ground..,cover with a light layer of whatever junk is there (if using soiled bedding, it MUST be lightly soiled, low nitrogen. Rotten hay works, Spruce branches, spruce needles, dirt) if it is still super cold, cover with a clear tarp until the spuds sprout and poke out. Keep covering the plants as they grow. Tada.

Chickadoodles will the vinegar harm the strawberries? I've killed out volunteer trees using hot water, salt and vinegar before....and anything growing near it too.....for a long, long time.

Alaskan, I like your mode of gardening. The least fuss the better.
