Sad, isn't it, when food is trying to kill you. I am Diabetic and have Heart disease so what I can/need to eat for my heart health is not the same as what my Diabetes requires and vice-a-versa.
Sometimes when I go to the grocery store (I have learned to read labels and do the Carb math) sometimes I just want to sit in the aisle and cry. I have to keep my daily Carb intake under 100 grams which is not that hard but I am alway hungry.
Folks here have made some really great suggestions, just follow what they and your doctor say, cut out sugars as much as possible and you should be o.k.
Oh, and Stevia!!!! If you have a sweet tooth Stevia is a great plant based sugar substitute. I am allergic to all the sugar substitutes but Stevia is safe. Just make sure you get as pure a Stevia as you can. I get SweetLeaf Stevia from CVS. Watch though, there are actually Stevia products out there that have sugar added.
My T2 was caused by nearly 10 years of taking a tyrone kinese inhibitor chemo drug for the chronic myeloid leukemia. It eventually did a real number on my pancreas (among other things), one of the primary reasons I entered the TFR clinical trial. So not eating sugar and doing jumping jacks will only slow the progression down for me. I've never liked white bread but love anything wholegrain so that's no problem. I even like wholegrain pasta. My other problem however is I don't care for most meat, never have, especially pork or processed. I like most dairy but eliminating high carb legumes and fruits from my diet causes a whole new set of problems. I did great for a year on the DASH diet, at least with the numbers, but still didn't control the wild swings so right now I am in total rebellion, eating whatever I want, having a serious pity party and completely enjoying it. Don't worry, the guilt will kick in soon and I'll climb back on the never enjoy another icecream cone unless you want to go blind wagon.

I would spend the money and talk to a dietician. It's a bit complicated. But an important piece of it is exercise, and I'm not talking you have to Sweat to the Oldies, but a nice brisk walk after dinner (or even a nice slow walk working your way up to faster/longer) will go a long way to helping you process glucose better. Lifting weights (and again, I'm not talking huge weights, just get a set of 3, 5, 8 lb dumbbells) also helps you burn fat and process glucose better.
Just looked at my extended forecast, it looks fab:
This reminds me of a few summers ago when all it did was rain and I began growing mushrooms in the grout in my bathroom.
