The Old Folks Home

I just called it a day. It's been a long one. DH cut down two trees and chained them into rounds. I migrated between tractor operator and loading the rounds into the bucket. By noon the temp was up and the humidity miserable. The chain saw decided to self destruct a part and while DH ran it down to the Amish neighbor who sells engines and repairs them along with selling chain saws for the needed part, I took a Tomahawk and went to work chopping out seedling trees that were trying to take over the area we had cleared earlier this spring. While I was working, I happened upon something weird. I found a pile of white chicken feathers near the pond.

I don't have any white chickens and everybody is accounted for. The neighbor who just lost their flock to a fox had some sort of backyard yellow/buff hens so I don't have any idea where a white chicken came from or why it was plucked near our pond.

Would a fox do something like make a kill and move it to a different location before taking it to its den?

We have a severe thunderstorm watch here. I've given up sitting up the bean poles we cut for the pole beans until we get through this rough weather.

Maddysmamaw, try sprinkling a little dried basil in their area. I know it works really good for flies, but not sure how it would do for gnats, however, while using the basil, I don't notice many gnats. It doesn't do a thing for mosquitoes though.

I got 'em. I still have to load them...lol. Also waiting for pics of other birds @getaclue and @chickisoup
Did I get those names correct?
:wee

I can use the kitchen now!

I will be baking bread tomorrow, in the morning before it is over 100. Supposed to go up to 112 next week.
Ooooh...very nice Ron!
Not really..... Grands were so ticked when I called them last time, that I told spouse to handle it....spouse refused to handle it.

Sigh

Sitter said there looks to be enough feed in my giant trashcan feeder to use that for all animals until spouse is in town Saturday to unlock the car.

Bunch of crazy.

We have been trying to be better with the heat management. We haven't been great though..... we managed to start our hike today at 8:40.... really should have started at 7. Still though, we didn't die, yeah. We did have lots of water. And I kept thinking of you two hiking ladies. :D
That makes me angry and it's not even my family....lol.

I vote yes on foxes making a kill and moving it. Two years ago when the foxes hit they took all the Silkie hens and the one black hen. Fast forward a couple of days...I saw the young foxes traipsing across the far end of the yard and it looked like they were carrying something. I booted it over to the area but the foxes and whatever they had was gone. About 2 days later we come down to the farm and the body of the black hen (minus her head) is laying by the house. About 10 feet away from the hen is the body of a young fox. Apparently our dog intervened and killed the fox. And the fox must've been toting around the dead hen.

Last summer a wing, presumably from the little oegb rooster that was killed that first year...showed up under the evergreen in the front of the yard. It got tossed in the burning barrel. Another wing has showed up in front stall of the barn. It's another oegb wing...possibly the first roo or possibly from Mr. Peeperton who the foxes got last summer.

Girls we can go out and eat - as soon as we get someone to pay for it all. and figure out how to get us to a restaurant close enough for all of us.

BTW Baskin Robbins makes a fantastic flavor called Mocha Almond Fudge, seriously it's to die for.
