The Old Folks Home

Good "crunchy" morning everyone.
Been too busy to stop and chat lately. Hope everyone is doing well (I'll catch up with the pages of stuff I've missed after my next cuppa).

Well, anything I didn't cover last night is probably toast. Stood by the kitchen window with my first cuppa earlier and watched the horefrost come up from the flood plain, creep out the woods and come rolling across the field toward the house. In the first light I could already see the thick layer of white on the dark colored quilts that are laying over the tomato towers. The plants are loaded with just turning tomatoes. I can only hope the temps hadn't dropped too long before dawn, sigh. Didn't bother with rest of the gardens except for a few tender herbs. All the wet this year combined with too many crisp nights let the powdery mildew and blight make a mess of the rest of the crops. Even the first round of the Roma tomatoes mostly succumbed to blossom end rot because of all the rains.

At least I managed the healthiest bunch of chicks I've ever had and the Kale they love so much also loves the frost so the chicks will still be happy little campers this morning.

The sunlight is beginning to pour thru the kitchen window so it should have the frost burnt away soon but I still have time for another cuppa before it's time to go out and assess the damage. I just hope it didn't get cold enough during the night to freeze the apples loaded on the trees or I'll be doing apple sauce all weekend and I don't have my jars ready yet.

It's really ok. It's time. I love the fall and I am so ready to tear down and put to bed my very sad looking gardens anyway.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. Everyone that isn't along the gulf that is. Sincere prayers for any of my BYC family that might be in the path of that frightening hurricane. Please stay safe :hugs

There is a cemetery in CA that I read about that does natural burials. You cannot be embalmed, you are buried in a plain pine box with minimal hardware, and the cemetery it's self is rolling hillsides planted in prairie grass and wildflowers. They DO place a tracking device in the box with each body, so if a loved one wants to go visit with the dead, they can go to the "help desk" (whatever they call it) and borrow a tracking device programmed with the correct "plot" and wander out in the meadow looking for a slight low place in the ground. I thought that was pretty neat.

There is a cemetary like that here in Wisconsin. Just really getting going. I love the whole concept. Too bad it's so far away from us. Perfect for the DH. He's not sure about the cremation thing. I keep telling him I want to be fertilizer for my gardens, just mix me in with the chicken poop. I'm serious, he's not buying it.

Over 24 hours later, I hear a chick peeping! (I kept the windows open)! There was the white chick, at the side of the green tractor (green tractor has almost fully grown chicks) asking how to get in.

Still can't believe a bright white chick (and yes, we are still green here...but fading to brown) made it that long!! (we have been 50s in the day, 40s at night).

chicks are back out today.... I think the tractor is now safe.

Glad you found at least the two chicks.

Congratulations!

Times two on the new job!!!! Tell him we all said to stay safe!

my mom''s dad could grow out a perfect Santa beard.

It was cool.

But grandma hated facial hair, so rarely let him.

Never seen my DH w/o facial hair but saw some pics. He keeps the beard. Tho he always has it super groomed he can now rock the whole Santa thing. One year I had (emphasis on "had", my onc wouldn't let me off the hook because of problems at the time) to see my onc on Christmas eve so we decided to make the best of it and donned our best Santa hats etc. One of the nurses kind of "lost it" and insisted on taking selfies with Santa! :lau

Ok, I think I've caught up for the moment so I better get my jeans on and head out to the coop before my loud mouthed complaining Aussie hen causing everybody else to go deaf!!!

This just proves how variable we are weather wise in the US...We have another heat advisory for this weekend! More days over 100. Hopefully this will be the last one of the year. Our firs freeze is usually in November or December. Even so, I have kept a potted jade plant on my front porch for 10 years...

I brought mine from FL, but it is coming in before the freeze.

I took a picture on my walk this morning. The University is working on a water way project for a fork of Putah Creek that was cut off from the water way. There is a lake that is more like a pond called lake Spafford. The project will create some falls and re circulation with filtering to clean up the water.

I wanted to get a picture to see what the change in water color is from now to when the new system is running. Of course I also made sure to get some Ducks in the picture! I will post a new picture later when the project is completed.
